Some of those injured in the attack had stab wounds, police say.

Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath said eyewitnesses described seeing people lying on the ground with stab wounds after the attack.

"We need to verify via witnesses" Nath told reporters, per Sky News.

Police describe how 'white vehicle' crashed into Tiergarten

"According to our latest information, the vehicle drove into the Tiergarten around 10pm (8pmGMT), injuring several people in the process, and then came to a standstill after hitting a tree here in the Tiergarten," a police spokesperson at the scene said.

"It was empty, which is why we are currently working intensively to track down the perpetrator or perpetrators."

The police did not describe the vehicle beyond saying that it was white.

'It’s a dark day for the community,' a witness at the LGBTQ+ event said

Julian Miethig, who had attended the LGBTQ+ party at the Brandenburg Gate earlier, said he had just wanted to go to an afterparty when he heard from a friend that “something bad happened there and there are a lot of fire trucks, a lot of emergency vehicles, ambulances.”

He said he went to Tiergarten and was shocked that something like this could have happened at Berlin's pride celebrations.

“It’s a dark day for the community,” he said.

Organisers shared evacuation message on social media

Following the incident organisers of the LGBTQ+ parade used social media to call on participants to evacuate the site for their own safety.

A message was shared on their Instagram story in English and German that said: “Event cancelled” and “Please leave the venue calmly and orderly.”

Everyone was advised to make their way towards the central railway station and away from the Tiergarten and to not walk through the park.

Mayor of Berlin condemned the 'brutal' attack

Kai Wegner, the governing mayor of Berlin, condemned the incident as “an attack on our free and open society” in a post on X and thanked the emergency services for doing “everything in their power.”

He wrote in a post on X: “After a peaceful and colorful CSD, the assembly for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal way.

“Berlin is the city of freedom - and our freedom has been attacked in the most horrific way today.”
