Hollywood film director Chuck Russell, who was behind classics like The Mask, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and The Blob, has "died unexpectedly" at the age of 74

Hollywood film director Chuck Russell has died at the age of 74. The moviemaker was behind classics such as The Mask, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and The Blob amongst a host of others.

But on Friday night, TMZ reported that he had "died unexpectedly" at his home in San Diego. The outlet also explained that the local fire department responded to a call to his home on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Chuck, who had Logan, Riley, and Carlyn with his ex-wife Patti Rao, had been married to actress Ania Zeyne since 2007, and it's thought that the family are now travelling to his home to find out more.

Born in Illinois in 1952, Chuck got his start in film in his early twenties when be became a production manager and assistant director and worked across numerous independent films.

At the same time, he wrote screenplays and whilst serving as an executive producer on 1981's Hell Night, which starred Linda Blair of The Exorcist fame, he met Frank Darabont, who went on to become a frequent collaborator of his.

In 1984, Chuck's script Dreamscape was produced and starred Dennis Quaid. Chuck's own directorial debut came in 1987 with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dram Warriors, before going on to write and direct The Blob in 1988.

International acclaim came in 1994 when he helmed The Mask, and the superhero slapstick film starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz became a box office smash. What followed was action films Erasure, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and The Scorpion King, the 2002 move that gave Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson his first leading role.

In more recent years, Chuck was behind Paradise City, which starred Bruce Willis and John Travolta, and his film film was supernatural horror Witchboard, which was released in 2024 and served as a remake of the 1980s classic.

In one of his final interviews, which was released just over a month ago, Chuck reflected on just how much had changed in the industry during his lengthy career.

He told THR: "Well, obviously culturally everybody's a lot more sensitive. So, some some things that I boldly enjoyed doing, you'd be more cautious about, I suppose, these days.

"I personally am like aware of it. I was raised by strong women and I like those in my films. I think the 90s had a gutsiness about it was ingrained because of the amount of live action work we were doing and a little less cynical storytelling. These films are edgy by nature but we're allowed to give the audience a good time, and potentially, at least a half-happy ending.

"I think people know that they're to be entertained with less political messages than the subsequent films. Nothing against those kind of films, there's some wonderful thought-provoking ones."

.As soon as the news broke, fans rushed to social media to pay tribute to Chuck. One fan wrote on X: "Very sad to hear that Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, Witchboard) has passed away. His memory will live on through his films that he gave us."

Another said: "Sad news! RIP Chuck Russell" whilst a third wrote: "R.I.P. Chuck Russell. Thank you for some of my favourite genre movies. Dream warrand The Blob will always be on a viewing rotation. Sad news."

A fourth said: "Though little known to the general public, he nonetheless captivated millions of viewers. He directed The Mask, one of the best Freddy Krueger films, gave Schwarzenegger one of his most memorable roles, and The Rock his first major part. Rest in peace, Chuck Russell."
