The reclaimed Bhalswa landfill site in the national capital will be converted into an inter-state bus terminal (ISBT), the Delhi Transport Department said on Tuesday. The announcement came during a review meeting of the transport department and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), chaired by Delhi transport minister Pankaj Singh.
In an official statement, the department said officials briefed the minister that the Delhi government is planning to construct a new DTC inter-state bus terminal in Bhalswa on about 20 acres of land, which is being reclaimed from the landfill site.
“The proposed terminal is expected to significantly improve interstate bus connectivity and passenger facilities in the northern part of the city," it said.
The Bhalswa landfill is among the three main landfill sites in Delhi, apart from Ghazipur, and Okhla. The city government is aiming for complete reclamation of the site by December 2026. Of the 70 acres of land, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has managed to reclaim less than 10 acres of land so far.
Speaking to News18, an official said before taking up this project, a feasibility study will be undertaken. “The results of this study will decide the future of the project," they said.
Delhi currently has three interstate bus terminals—Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan. With the increasing population, the city needs more ISBTs.
The minister also directed the department to conduct a feasibility assessment for developing a new DTC depot along the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) corridor, considering the rapid urban expansion and growing transport demand in the region.
In addition, the minister instructed officials to undertake upgradation of the existing bus depot in Burari to enhance operational efficiency and support the expanding electric bus fleet.
Delhi to have 7,500 EV buses by end of 2026
In the statement, the minister said that strengthening Delhi’s EV fleet remains a key priority of the government, with a strong focus on environmentally sustainable and commuter-friendly mobility solutions.
During the review, officials informed the minister that Delhi presently operates a fleet of more than 4,000 EV buses, and 200 additional electric buses will be inducted into the fleet during the current month.
“With continued procurement and deployment, the electric bus fleet is projected to reach 7,500 buses by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone in Delhi’s transition towards sustainable public transportation," the statement added.
The minister was also informed that electric charging infrastructure has already been established in 44 bus depots across Delhi.
Additionally, under the PM e-Drive Phase I and II initiatives, EV charging networks are currently being developed in 36 depots, which will further support the expansion of Delhi’s electric bus fleet in the coming months.
