Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMCRI) in Hubballi has become the first government hospital in the State to perform robot-assisted Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery.

The landmark procedure was carried out on a 55-year-old female patient suffering from advanced osteoarthritis of the left knee.

The surgery was performed under the guidance of Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics Dr. S. F. Kammar, along with Dr. Jyoti, and a dedicated team of anaesthetists.

Robot-assisted knee replacement is an advanced surgical technique that enhances precision in implant positioning, improves limb alignment, and helps optimise functional outcomes. The successful completion of this procedure marks the introduction of cutting-edge robotic joint replacement technology in the government healthcare system of Karnataka.

According to Dr. S.F. Kammar, the achievement reflected KMCRI’s commitment to providing world-class orthopaedic care to patients irrespective of their socio-economic background. “The introduction of robotic arthroplasty is expected to improve surgical accuracy, patient satisfaction, and post-operative recovery while strengthening post-graduate training and academic excellence,” he said.
