A light aircraft has crashed into a home in Lower Saxony, Germany, and at least one person has died

A plane has crashed into a home in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Authorities confirmed at least one person, a man, has died following the incident in Ganderkesee. It is currently unclear whether he was the pilot.

Police are searching for another person who is thought to have been on board, a police spokesperson told NDR Lower Saxony.

The building is potentially at risk of collapse, authorities say. No other injuries have been reported. Police confirmed the family living in the house were thankfully not home at the time of the crash.

Air traffic in the area has been suspended while emergency services use drones as part of their response. Authorities have also cut off power on the affected street.

A contact point for residents has been set up at the nearby Ganderkesee shooting range.

The aircraft is a single-engine, four-seater light aircraft manufactured by the Italian company Tecnam. It is approximately 7.5m long and has a wingspan of 10.5m.

According to local reports, emergency services plan to recover the aircraft using a crane, with the operation expected to last several hours.

A structural engineer from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is also expected to assess the building.

Several firefighter crews are at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.
