Adam Maxwell, 35, was celebrating his upcoming wedding when he suddenly fell ill and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical care after being put into a coma

A family has been left "devastated" after a groom-to-be was put into a coma during his stag do abroad.

Adam Maxwell was enjoying his pre-wedding celebrations in Bucharest, Romania, when he was suddenly taken ill and rushed to hospital.

The man had flown out on Friday March, 14, but by Sunday morning was confined to his head. The groom-to-be had started "slurring" his words and being sick, before his health took a turn for the worse.

Adam's pals called an ambulance and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. His family say doctors diagnosed him with type 1 diabetes, a condition they said he was completely unaware of.

Scans also revealed his body was devoid of insulin and his blood sugar levels were alarmingly high causing his blood to thicken. There were also grave concerns about potential pancreas and kidney failure, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Adam was moved to a high dependency ward where he was hooked up to a drip and given insulin. However, in the early hours of Monday, March 16, Adam's brother, Scott Maxwell, received a distressing call from the hospital informing him that Adam's heart had stopped for over two - minutes before medics managed to revive him.

He was subsequently transferred to the critical care unit of another hospital, where he was put into a medically induced coma. The 35-year-old, who is from Manchester by lives in Coventry with his fiancée, is currently on a ventilator to assist his breathing.

He has cerebral palsy and planned to relocate back to Manchester to be nearer to friends and family after his wedding, which is set for September this year. Adam remains in Romania, accompanied by his brother after his friends returned home.

His family said Adam is awaiting brain scans and is being treated with antibiotics after contracting pneumonia. Laura, Scott's fiancée, said: "We're absolutely devastated that this is happening. It's all so surreal and everyone is very emotional about it.

"We're all worried and are hoping for the best outcome, really. His wedding is not until September, but it's just a bit of a mess at the moment. I haven't even got the words to describe what's going on."

The family is fundraising to fly relatives to Romania to support Scott and cover the escalating costs of accommodation and daily expenses.

Laura added: "Nobody planned for this to happen, so we're fundraising to support his brother whilst they're over there. As it stands at the moment, it's so unclear about how long he's going to be out there. But we're not going to leave him in a foreign country on his own."
