Voters in Kerala delivered a decisive victory to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Assembly election, ending 10 years of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule. Riding an anti-incumbent wave, the UDF won 102 seats, relegating the LDF to 35 and rebounding from its electoral wipeout in the Assembly elections in 2016 and again in 2021.

Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday resigned as Kerala Chief Minister following the LDF’s crushing defeat in the April 9 Assembly elections, bringing an end to a decade-long tenure in office. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has accepted the resignation and requested Vijayan to continue as caretaker chief minister until alternative arrangements are made, according to a Raj Bhavan statement.

The Congress-led UDF has swept the Kerala Assembly polls with a historic win in the State. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan said the LDF would examine the reasons behind its defeat in the elections and take corrective measures. “The LDF will evaluate and study the defeat, after which required corrections will be made. We expect the support of the people for it,” he said. The BJP has won from three Assembly constituencies — Nemom, Kazhakuttam and Chathannoor. The southern State has 140 constituencies.
