Kylian Mbappe has played down his record at Real Madrid in comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo’s and revealed he receives advice from the Portugal superstar.
Mbappe scored 44 goals in 59 games in all competitions during his first year in the Spanish capital and has made a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign, netting 14 times in just 10 appearances.
Ronaldo managed 33 in his first year at Madrid but Mbappe shrugged when asked to compare his efforts with that of Ronaldo.
The France captain told Movistar: “Yes, but he did it for nine years and I’ve done it for barely a year and a half.”
He is the number one, Mbappe says of Ronaldo
Ronaldo netted a remarkable 451 goals in 438 competitive games for Madrid as the club battled for supremacy in Spain and Europe with a Barcelona side led by Lionel Messi.
“I think that in Madrid, he is the number one, he is the reference player of Madrid who has done a lot of things,” added Mbappe of the 40-year-old, who continues to score goals on a regular basis for Portugal and club side Al-Nassr. “People, even today, dream of him and all the things he has done.
“I want to chart my own path and I hope that people will dream of me in the same way, which could be a historic moment for me.”
I have the chance to talk to him – Mbappe
Mbappe has never made a secret of the fact Ronaldo was his idol growing up, with the 26-year-old having posters on his bedroom wall of the former Manchester United and Juventus star.
And he admits to now being lucky enough to count Ronaldo as a mentor who is willing to share knowledge and experiences with Mbappe.
He said: “Cristiano Ronaldo has always been my role model, an example for me. I have the chance to talk to him, he gives me advice, he helps me… he is my number one.”
Mbappe ruled out of Iceland game
Mbappe found the net in Les Blues’ 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan on Friday but limped off with less than 10 minutes remaining after suffering what appeared to be a recurrence of an ankle injury.
“Kylian Mbappe suffered a blow to his right ankle and was forced to leave the match against Azerbaijan on Friday evening in Paris at the Parc des Princes,” the FFF said in a statement.
“Upon the French delegation’s return to Clairefontaine, the French team captain spoke with Didier Deschamps. He will not be able to play Monday in Reykjavik against Iceland.
“The national coach has confirmed his withdrawal. Kylian Mbappe has been released to his club and will not be replaced.”
Ronaldo will be in action tomorrow as Portugal take on Hungary.
