Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDeadline announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda will direct the film adaptation of the stage a cappella musical Octet by Dave Malloy. Octet first debuted Off-Broadway in 2019. This project will serve as Miranda’s follow-up to his Academy Award-nominated film tick, tick… BOOM!, released by Netflix, which earned Andrew Garfield an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. tick, tick… BOOM! (2021) marked Miranda’s directorial debut.
Composer and playwright Dave Malloy will adapt his own book for the screen and will also serve as an executive producer. Octet tells the story of eight internet-obsessed individuals who meet in a church basement for a support group, hoping to reconnect with people in their real lives. They share stories about doomscrolling and their dependence on the online world, exploring themes of addiction, connection, and nihilism.
Dave Malloy is most well known for his Tony Award-winning Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, but his further stage work also includes The Witches (2023), Three Houses, and Moby-Dick (2019).
Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known as the creator of Hamilton, in which he also starred as the titular character in the original Broadway cast, has recently focused on songwriting. After making a name for himself on Broadway with In the Heights, Bring it on: The Musical, and Hamilton, he entered the world of Hollywood with Disney, writing the songs for Moana (2016), starring in Mary Poppins Returns (2018), and later writing songs for Encanto and The Little Mermaid live-action adaptation. He released a concept album, Warriors, with Eisa Davis in October 2024. He then wrote the songs for Mufasa: The Lion King (2024). Miranda will now turn his focus back to directing with the Octet film adaptation.
