Ex-Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has snubbed Roma for Fenerbahce as he prepares to leave Marseille. The forward was expected to bid farewell to the Ligue 1 club this summer after two seasons.
Roma had originally emerged as the most likely club to seal his signature having previously been prepared to put together a €45m (£38.5m) package. But it appears that they have been beaten to the punch by Turkish side Fenebahce.
According to RMC Sport, the Super Lig have agreed a €40m (£34.1m) package with Marseille, having held talks with the French club and Greenwood’s former employers Man United.
The Red Devils are due 40 percent of any of the profit that Marseille make in selling Greenwood as part of the original deal that saw him move to France, meaning they will secure around €6m (£5.6m) once his move to Turkey is rubber-stamped.
It is also suggested that Greenwood is set to earn a considerable wage with Fenerbahce, with his four-year contract thought to be worth around €10m (£8.5m) per season - one of the main reasons why he has chosen not to pursue a move to Roma.
With his club future now clarified, attention will turn to Greenwood’s international allegiance, having been involved in a confusing situation with Jamaica. The striker had previously represented England but was reportedly set to declare for Jamaica.
But he appeared to perform a u-turn, having not been called up for the nation’s most recent fixtures. Former Jamaica boss Steve McLaren said: “We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp.
“But in a conversation with his family [we found out] he's not going to commit at this time to anybody. He's taking his time over that, so it's a little bit disappointing. We probably have to be more patient, but we will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica.
"He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the present moment. We have to respect that however much we've worked hard to get him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future."
