Heavy monsoon rains, continuing for the past 36 hours, have wreaked havoc in many parts of the district, including the Kala Amb industrial area, where waterlogging has caused massive disruption for people.

Officials said landslides hit several places in the rural areas of Nahan district, but no loss of life has been reported so far.

The main rivers of Sirmaur district, Tons, Yamuna, Bata, Giri and Markanda and dozens of streams are in spate, with the administration advising people to stay away.

Amid the incessant rainfall in parts of Uttarkashi, landslides and resultant debris near Nalupani and Nagoon have led to the Gangotri National Highway getting blocked repeatedly, officials said on Friday (July 10).

According to information received from the District Disaster Control Room, several administration teams are present at the site to clear the road, but the rain and falling stones are hampering the process of removing the debris.

Officials said the road was cleared for a while, but more debris was tumbling down the hill due to the rain. They said the administration has been put on alert.

Following relentless rains in parts of Himachal Pradesh, all government and private educational institutions and Anganwadis would remain shut in Himachal’s Sirmaur and Solan districts on Friday (July 10), officials said.

The MeT department said heavy rainfall was likely in many parts of the State, cautioning against possible landslides, flash floods, uprooting of trees and road blockages.

“Continuous rainfall is leading to obstruction of rural roads, increased risk of landslides and general disruption of normal life, particularly in rural and hilly areas. Such inclement weather conditions are likely to endanger the life and safety of students commuting to and from schools across the districts,” two separate orders issued by Sirmaur and Solan Deputy Commissioners (DCs) Priyanka Verma and Manmohan Sharma, respectively, said.

The recent flooding in the Vasai-Virar region in Maharashtra’s Palghar district is the result of unplanned urbanisation and encroachments on natural drains, rather than just heavy rainfall, Forest and Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik has said.

He said a comprehensive flood mitigation action plan will be drafted within 15 to 20 days using satellite and drone surveys.

Naik visited several worst-hit areas, including Nalasopara, Naigaon, Sasunavghar, and Safale on Thursday (July 9) and interacted with the public.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari travelled to Murshidabad by road on Friday (July 10) in his first visit to the district after assuming office, as incessant rains forced him to cancel his scheduled journey by air, a senior officer said.

Heavy monsoon showers lashed a large part of West Bengal, with Cooch Behar in the northern parts of the State receiving the highest 143 mm of rain in 24 hours till Friday (July 10) morning.

The officer said the Chief Minister’s travel plans were revised because of adverse weather conditions, and the road travel was approved after proper arrangements were put in place.

Heavy downpour for the past few days triggered floods in three Tripura districts, forcing around 11,000 people to seek refuge in relief camps, an official said on Friday (July 10).

Congress Birajit Sinha alleged that the water resource department failed to repair the sluice gates in time, which led to flash floods in several low-lying areas of Unakoti, Dhalai and Khowai districts.

However, no loss of life has been reported till now.

A State Disaster Management Authority official said that the waters of the swollen Manun river have started receding, following a let-up in rains.

Cloud-laden skies enveloped Delhi on Friday morning as the IMD issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain, after heavy showers drenched the national capital a day earlier.

The city received moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Safdarjung, the city’s base station, recording 33.6 mm till 8:30 a.m., the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Lodhi Road received 33.7 mm of rainfall, followed by Ridge at 25.9 mm, Ayanagar at 4.2 mm and Palam at 1.8 mm during the same period.

School and office-goers faced a harrowing time in the rain-drenched State capital as rains continued well past the morning, causing waterlogging and slowing down traffic in several parts of the city, including its IT hub of Sector V in the Salt Lake area.

Dum Dum, where the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is located, recorded South Bengal’s highest rainfall at 96 mm, according to weather office data.

A 60-year-old woman was killed and her husband injured after their mud house collapsed during heavy rain in Muzaffarnagar district early Friday (July 10), police said.

The incident took place at Khampur village under the Mansurpur police station limits when Saroj (60) and her husband, Krishan Kumar, were asleep inside their house, SHO Vipin Tyagi said.

Saroj’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination while Mr. Kumar is undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said.

Continuous torrential rainfall disrupted normal life in Khatima, with dense cloud cover witnessed in the early hours of Friday (July 10).

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the region is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday (July 9) issued a ‘red alert’ for parts of western Uttar Pradesh, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours as intensified monsoon activity claimed at least seven lives and caused disruptions across the State.

The deaths were reported from Sant Kabir Nagar, Kushinagar, Bulandshahr, Shamli and Ghaziabad in separate rain-related incidents, officials said.

In Sant Kabir Nagar, two women died after being struck by lightning in separate villages. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Arun Kumar said Chandni (17) of Katya village and Varsana (60) of Pratapur village died while working in fields in Mehdawal Tehsil. He said reports had been sought and government assistance would be provided to their families.

An inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) led by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Joint Secretary Nishtha Tiwari visited flood-affected areas of Arunachal Pradesh to assess the damage caused by recent flash floods and landslides, assuring the state of all possible assistance from the Centre even as several areas remained inaccessible due to continuing rain.

The eight-member high-level delegation inspected affected areas, including Lower Siang district, to assess the extent of the damage. However, adverse weather conditions and blocked roads prevented the team from reaching some of the worst-hit locations.

Paonta Sub-Divisional Officer Dwij Goyal has declared a holiday on Friday for all government and private educational institutions in the Paonta sub-division of Himachal’s Sirmaur district in view of an alert issued by the India Meteorological Department for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, along with Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi, in the presence of Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Paatil, on Thursday reviewed the flood situation with officials and legislators in Surat.

After the meeting, Gujarat Deputy CM praised Surat residents and relief agencies for teamwork during floods.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Sanghavi said, “Many areas in Surat had to face a flood situation due to heavy rains on July 7. Looking at the past records of rain in this city, this was the heaviest rainfall Surat had witnessed. The people of Surat worked as a team to come out of this difficult situation. They helped the government agencies wherever they could reach. It was a challenging time. There were 7-8 areas where there was serious waterlogging. NDRF, SDRF, and other agencies worked hard to evacuate and relocate people. The CM today held a review meeting in Surat. The CM has announced ₹500 crore towards a project to stop water from the creek entering the city.”

More than 10 people were confirmed to have died in rain-related incidents across the country as torrential monsoon showers unleashed widespread destruction across several parts of the country on Thursday, inundating roads, uprooting trees, damaging property and disrupting normal life.

Authorities scrambled to restore normalcy amid forecasts of more rain, with people wading through knee-deep water in residential areas in several cities and traffic crawling on major roads and highways.

Fresh floods and landslides were reported in Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, with rising water levels in a river submerging a 100-foot iron bridge in Kinnaur.

Relentless monsoon rain battered Delhi, inundating roads, uprooting trees and triggering widespread traffic snarls. The downpour also helped the national capital record its cleanest air since September 2023, with parts of the city receiving over 160 mm of rainfall.
