Located along Africa’s southeastern coast, the Republic of Mozambique shipped US$7.8 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That dollar amount results from a 52.5% increase from $5.1 billion 5 years earlier in 2021.

Year over year, the total value of Mozambican exports fell by -5.1% compared to $8.2 billion for 2024.

Based on the average exchange rate for 2025, the Mozambican metical depreciated by -0.3% against the US dollar since the end of December 2021 but appreciated by 0.5% from December 2024 to December 2025. Mozambique’s stronger local currency compared to 2024 makes its exports paid for in weaker US dollars relatively more expensive for international buyers starting from American currency.

The latest available country-specific data shows that 81.5% of products exported from Mozambique was bought by importers in: India (20.6% of the Mozambican total), South Africa (12.6%), United Kingdom (8.3%), mainland China (8.2%), Singapore (7.2%), South Korea (6.4%), Vietnam (3.7%), Netherlands (3.6%), Thailand (3.5%), Japan (3.1%), Zambia (2.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (2%).

From a continental perspective, 60.6% of Mozambique exports by value was delivered to Asian countries while 18.4% was sold to fellow African nations importers.

Mozambique shipped another 19.3% worth of goods to customers based in Europe.

Smaller percentages went to buyers in North America (1.6%), Latin America (0.16%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceania’s Australia, New Zealand and Marshall Islands (0.003%).

Given Mozambique’s population of 35.8 million people, its total US$7.8 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $220 for every resident in the southeast African nation. That per-capita metric lags the average $235 in 2024.

Mozambique’s top 10 export product categories are concentrated product categories, given that they represent 93.8% of the overall value of Mozambican global shipments.

Salt, sulphur, stone and cement represent the fastest grower among the top 10 export categories, up by 47.1% from 2024 to 2025.

In second place for improving export sales was the vegetables group via a 46.3% advance.

Mozambique’s shipments of fertilizers posted the third-fastest gain in value, up by 22.5%.

The leading decliner among Mozambique’s top 10 export categories were oil seeds, thanks to a -52.4% year-over-year drop.

The product categories listed above is at the two-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code level.

Drilling down to the more detailed four-digit HTS codes, Mozambique’s most valuable exported goods are petroleum gases (25.2% of Mozambican total), coal including solid fuels made from coal (21.4%), raw aluminum (17.2%), electrical energy (5.6%), titanium ores and concentrates (3.6%), unmanufactured tobacco including tobacco waste (3.3%), dried shelled vegetables (3.1%), aluminum wire (2.5%), natural sands (2%), oil seeds (1.6%), crude oil (also 1.6%) then niobium or zirconium ores and concentrates (1.4%).

Mozambique incurred an overall trade deficit of -US$1.66 billion during 2025, expanding by 65.3% from -$1 billion one year earlier during 2024.

In macroeconomic terms, Mozambique’s total exported goods represent 12.6% of its overall Gross Domestic Product for 2025 ($61.95 billion valued in Purchasing Power Parity US dollars). That 12.6% for exports to overall GDP in PPP for 2025 compares to 13.9% one year earlier. Those percentages suggest a relatively decreasing reliance on products sold on international markets for Mozambique’s total economic performance, albeit based on a short timeframe.

Another key metric indicating a country’s economic performance is its unemployment rate. The Mozambican unemployment rate averaged 6.63% for 2025, down from an average 6.67% jobless rate in 2024.
