A British mum recently bought fish and chips for a family of four, but people were left floored by the price of the meal. Becky shared her dining experience, and it left people taken aback

Lots of people love fish and chips, but it's quite well documented that the British staple meal has become expensive. In fact, it's often reported that prices have risen if you wish to sample a classic chippy tea, with several having shouted about rocketing costs in some parts of the UK.

However, one mum recently bought fish and chips for a family of four, and she left people totally taken aback by the price of the food. Becky, known as Becky's Bakes UK on TikTok, recently documented her experience in a candid video, but it wasn't quite what people expected to see when they watched it.

It's not the first time such a story has emerged either. Previously, the cost of a meal at a legendary fish and chip shop also took people by surprise.

In the clip, Becky said: "Before I show you what we ordered, guess how much this cost? It was feeding a family of four.

"£26.50 for fish and chips. I actually didn't think that was too bad. Convince me otherwise.

"We had one sausage in batter, a large portion of chips, one small cod, a quarter pounder with cheese and a pot of curry sauce. Considering what some takeaways charge these days, I actually walked away thinking that wasn't too bad.

"I'm interested to know what you think. Would you pay that, or has fish and chips got too expensive?"

She admitted she was super impressed with the food, and the size of the portions. It seems she was more than happy with what she ordered, and she wasn't the only one who thought it was good value.

Hundreds of people have liked the video, and dozens commented to share their thoughts too. One said: "That lot is a bargain."

Another added: "I got fish and chips on Friday. Two cod, two large chips, two soft drinks - £32.75."

A third replied: "Good deal considering the prices these days. Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "That's really cheap."

One more also noted: "That’s a decent large bag! In Derry, a large bag is ridiculous. It wouldn’t feed three people these days."

Is the cost of fish and chips rising?

Generally, the cost of fish and chips is thought to be rising. In fact, it's reported prices have nearly doubled since 2020.

The average price for cod and chips is now about £11.41. Meanwhile, haddock and chips cost an average of £10.29.

Prices differ depending on where you live, and the increase has occurred for a number of reasons. For one, there is less cod in the sea. Governments cut catch limits to protect fish. This can cause wholesale fish prices to rise.

Running massive deep fryers also takes a lot of power, and energy costs have spiked for shops. Not to mention, cooking oil and potatoes now cost more to buy too.
