  • A Grade 10 class at a high school in Atlantis surprised classmate Zachary September with a new school bag, using their own pocket money to buy it.
  • Teacher Tamlynn Storm posted the moment on TikTok, where the video has since accumulated more than 600 000 views.
  • The video sparked widespread conversation online about kindness among young people in the face of so many bullying incidents.

A spontaneous act of kindness by a Grade 10 class at Robinvale High School in Atlantis has captured hearts online after pupils surprised a classmate with a new school bag in a moment that has gone viral.

The video, posted by teacher Tamlynn Storm, has racked up more than 600 000 views and hundreds of comments from people touched by the pupils’ generosity and care for one another.

One user even said: “I want to see more videos of children being kind. I don’t wanna see videos about kids being bullied.”

Storm added that the idea started quietly about three weeks before the surprise, when a group of girls and some of Zachary September’s friends approached her during class.

“Ma’am, we’d like to buy Zak a new bag, but we need donations,” they told her.

The pupils had been collecting small change from their own pocket money and lunch money to contribute towards the gift.

Storm said:

I told them I could buy the bag if they struggled to raise enough money, but they insisted that they also wanted to contribute.

“Two days before I bought the bag, they came to me with about R152, which was half the cost. I added the rest.”

Even after the bag had been bought, the pupils continued bringing small amounts of money to contribute.

“They were honestly so cute the whole time with how seriously they took collecting the money,” she said.

Storm added that Chloe Arendse, Zachary’s classmate, had first raised the idea.

The surprise itself unfolded during class after the pupils devised a playful plan to distract Zachary long enough to transfer his belongings from his old bag into the new one.

“Zachary is not naughty in my class, so I never really have a reason to put him out,” Storm said.

“We had to come up with a plan to distract him long enough, so the learners could transfer everything from his old bag into the new one.”

The class jokingly created a scenario to keep him occupied outside the classroom while they prepared the surprise.

“At one point, they threw his old bag over the balcony because they needed more time,” Storm laughed.

“He kept saying, ‘But I didn’t throw my bag, ma’am, they must go get my bag’.”

Once everything was ready, Storm revealed the surprise to the visibly confused pupil.

“I turned to him and said, ‘We got you a new bag’,” she said.

“Then you saw his reaction in the video, with the class clapping. Some of the learners even became emotional.”

The class also wrote Zachary a note to explain why they wanted to do something special for him.

For Zachary, the moment came as a complete shock.

“I really didn’t expect what happened. I was shocked at first,” he said.

“To this day, I’m still very thankful to Miss Storm, to the learners, and especially to Chloe because I heard it was her idea to start everything.”

Zachary thanked the many strangers online who responded positively to the video after it spread across TikTok.

“Some of the comments online really got to me because I realised how big of a deal the moment became for other people too,” he said.

“I’d like to say thank you to everybody who sent messages and wished me well.”

Asked about the new bag, Zachary laughed and admitted: “It is a big upgrade.”

Storm said neither she nor the pupils expected the video to attract such widespread attention online.

“One of the girls just asked if they could use my phone to record the moment because learners aren’t allowed to have their phones at school.”

She said many people who commented on the video shared their own memories of school and reflected on how meaningful kindness from peers could be during difficult moments.

“A lot of people said they remembered not having enough while growing up and that nobody showed them this kind of kindness,” Storm added.

Others offered words of encouragement to the class and teacher, while some asked whether Zachary needed anything else.

“When Zachary’s mom commented on the video to thank the class and myself, that was also very special,” she said.

For Storm, the moment also highlighted a side of schooling that is often overlooked.

She added:

This is the kind of thing that happens at schools every day, but people don’t always see it because the media mostly focuses on the negative stories.

While acknowledging the many challenges teachers face daily, Storm described the Grade 10 group as one of the most caring classes she had taught.

“They are humble, hardworking and caring learners,” she said.

The video also sparked conversations online about kindness among young people, with many social media users contrasting the pupils’ action with the bullying often associated with school environments.

One TikTok user commented: “This is so precious. Instead of mocking him for the bag he has, they replaced it. Respect. Wish all learners could have this mindset.”

Another wrote: “That is the most amazingly special and thoughtful gesture. What a beautiful way to show love and kindness. Changing the world one kind gesture at a time.”

A third person added: “In a world full of hate and chaos, we still have good kids.”

Many others shared stories of their own school experiences, saying the video resonated with them because compassion among classmates was not always common when they were growing up.
