Former midwife Yolande Maritz Fouchee appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ahead of her sentencing proceedings. She was convicted of culpable homicide and multiple assault charges.

Disgraced former midwife Yolande Maritz Fouchee has been sentenced to 23 years’ imprisonment.

Fouchee appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Thursday, where Judge Mokhine Mosopa handed down his judgment on sentence.

In April, the same court found her guilty on one count of culpable homicide, one count of fraud, six counts of assault, five counts of assault involving a legal duty, and the employment of an unqualified person.

Fouchee’s crimes are the result of her secretly administering water mixed with labour induction medication without patients’ consent while routinely overlooking pregnancy complications and failing to refer patients to appropriate specialists.
