Veteran comedian Leon Schuster has delighted fans after appearing happy and healthy in a new social media photo, shared just days after celebrating his 75th birthday.
The beloved entertainer, best known for iconic South African films like You Must Be Joking, Oh Schuks... I’m Gatvol and Mr Bones, has endured a challenging few years marked by ongoing health struggles that have significantly affected his mobility and quality of life.
In the recent photo, posted by fellow comedian Kevin Fraser, Schuster appeared in good spirits as the pair teased a possible future collaboration.
"What could possibly go wrong?" Fraser joked in the caption, prompting an outpouring of support from fans who were pleased to see Schuster looking well.
The uplifting image comes weeks after Schuster opened up about the physical and emotional toll of multiple back surgeries. The comedian sustained a serious back injury while filming in 2023 and has since undergone several corrective procedures. Despite the operations, he has continued to battle chronic pain and previously revealed that he had been confined to bed and reliant on pain medication during parts of his recovery.
Beyond the physical challenges, Schuster has also spoken candidly about his experiences with depression and loneliness. He highlights the mental health impact that can accompany long-term illness and reduced mobility.
Last week, as he celebrated his milestone 75th birthday, Schuster thanked fans for their support in a heartfelt Facebook post.
"They say getting old is not for sissies," he joked. "But with your overwhelming support, I kick 'sissie' under her tail and become a bull again!"
He added that he remains deeply grateful for the love and encouragement he has received throughout his decades-long career.
Schuster remains optimistic about the future and has expressed a desire to return to filmmaking. He has previously revealed hopes of making another movie, this time inspired by his Christian faith.
"I trust in the Lord," he said.
For many fans, the latest photo serves as a welcome sign that one of South Africa's most cherished entertainers is maintaining his trademark sense of humour and positive outlook, even as he continues his journey towards better health.
