The South African men’s national football team has arrived in Mexico for the 2026 Fifa World Cup after visa issues delayed their exit from South Africa by a day.
The visa application and reception bungle, that did not seem to have a point of accountability. was resolved on Sunday, with the team and the bulk of the support staff leaving on Monday morning.
Only assistant coach Helman Mkhalele and head of security Mduduzi Mbatha were left behind because of the visa matters, but left South Africa on Tuesday afternoon after their visas were secured.
Head coach Broos, who was at the 1986 World Cup, then a 24-team event, with Belgium, who were losing semi-finalists to eventual winners Argentina, told SportyTv it was special for him to be in country.
“It’s a little special for me because 40 years ago, I was here with Belgium as a player,” Broos said.
“We also played the opening game against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, so it’s amazing that something like this has happened.
“It’s something special.”
Bafana Bafana will be based in Pachuca for the World Cup, and they will train at the Universidad del Futbol.
Broos’ charges are staying at the Camino Real Pachuca hotel, located just outside Pachuca.
South Africa will play the opening game against Mexico on 11 June, a repeat of the 2010 Opening World Cup game.
