In late September, five men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of terrorist-related activities at the U.S.-operated base before being released on bail. In a Tuesday press conference, British Head of National Counterterrorism Policing Laurence Taylor confirmed one of those men, 24-year-old Nouman Essghir – a dual British-Iranian national – was charged with one offence of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Additionally, Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, has been charged with engaging in conduct that was likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service between Aug. 31 and Sept. 28 – with authorities saying the country is believed to be Iran. The pair will appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court later Tuesday. The RAF Fairford base has been used to conduct strikes on Iran previously. The Iranian embassy in London, however, has denied the country's involvement in the suspected plot. A total of eight men have been arrested in connection with the broader investigation, six of which were later released on bail – a decision Taylor assured reporters had “good reason or rationale behind them” after facing mass scrutiny from the public.
