Yesterday afternoon, Ride with GPS officially unveiled its new 3D Maps, now live on the web and in the mobile app, helping users see their routes from a fresh perspective. In their words, “Flat maps have always forced riders to imagine the parts that matter most: the massive switchbacking climb and the ridge that drops into the valley. A contour line or a patch of terrain shading only goes so far. 3D Maps fundamentally changes that, letting riders tilt, rotate, and zoom into any route to visualize the terrain the way they’ll actually experience it.”

Ride with GPS believes 3D Maps can completely transform how riders prepare for and engage with routes, ultimately leading to better experiences. The new feature is built around three ways riders already interact with the map:

  • Preview in 3D: See the shape of a climb or descent before committing to a route, then tack on other tools like Community Photos, Heatmaps, and Advanced Layers to get a complete read on what to expect.
  • Plan in 3D: Visually spot the tough sections right away and build a route to incorporate some extra climbing (or to avoid it entirely); regardless, planning in 3D makes the process much more fun and engaging.
  • Navigate in 3D: Get real terrain context while riding, on a commute across town or a tour across the mountains, all while getting turn-by-turn directions to guide the way.
