NASA’s Van Allen Probe A is making an unexpected return to Earth years ahead of schedule. The spacecraft, launched to study the powerful radiation belts surrounding our planet, was originally expected to remain in orbit for many more years. However, intense solar activity during the Sun’s solar maximum expanded Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating extra drag on the satellite. This gradually pulled the probe out of orbit and toward reentry. Most of the spacecraft is expected to burn up in the atmosphere.
