Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) announced a proposal for establishing a ₹4,800-crore desalination plant at Minjur with a capacity of 400 million litres a day to meet the drinking water needs of North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri, and Minjur.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, he also unveiled a ₹500-crore project to provide uninterrupted 24x7 water supply to the Avadi Municipal Corporation. Besides, a project would be implemented to increase the capacity of the water treatment plant at Kilpauk at a cost of ₹410 crore.

Sewage network improvement

The Chief Minister also announced a ₹960-crore underground sewage project for the Kundrathur and Nandivaram-Guduvancheri municipalities. The underground sewage system in Perambur, Kolathur, Villivakkam, and Egmore in Chennai would be improved at a cost of ₹236 crore.

Mr. Vijay also announced ₹100 crore for creating roads, storm-water drains, streetlights, footpaths, solid-waste management facilities, playgrounds, and community halls in areas in Chennai that lacked proper infrastructure.
