Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to ensure the use of treated wastewater for all non-drinking purposes in government offices and public spaces, and called for strict monitoring of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to maintain water quality and prevent the wastage of potable water.
At a review meeting on STPs and treated water, held at the MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad on Wednesday (October 28, 2026), the Chief Minister called for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology at the treatment plants and directed officials to appoint a special officer at every plant. He also asked them to connect all the plants to the Command Control Centre and ensure monitoring by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA).
Treated water for landscaping
Mr. Reddy said treated water should be used for landscaping along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and in other areas. The use of treated water should also be made mandatory for landscaping at the Secretariat and the Chief Minister’s Office, as well as at public parks.
Directing officials to issue orders making the use of treated water compulsory for non-potable purposes in government offices, he said the Railways and Hyderabad Metro Rail should also be brought under the initiative. It should be ensured that treated water is used for all eligible purposes instead of fresh drinking water, he said.

Toll-free number to facilitate supply
The Chief Minister wanted treated water tankers to be tracked to monitor their movement and use. He also called for a toll-free number to facilitate the supply of treated water and asked officials to undertake a wide publicity campaign to promote its use.
He directed officials to incorporate conditions mandating the use of treated water at the stage of granting building permissions. Private sewage treatment plants should be encouraged, while the feasibility of operating treatment plants using solar power should be examined, he said.
Supply treated water to data centres
The Chief Minister also asked officials to ensure the supply of treated water to data centres, given their requirements, and to take measures keeping future demand in view.
Stressing that water quality should not be compromised under any circumstances, Mr. Reddy said the government must ensure that Hyderabad did not face a shortage of drinking water. He called for continuous monitoring of drinking water supply and cautioned officials against negligence.
The departments concerned were directed to ensure that the measures announced at the meeting were implemented from November 1.
Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Secretary to the Chief Minister Manick Raj, Director of School Education Naveen Nicholas, Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner Srujana, Malkajgiri Municipal Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy, TGSPDCL Managing Director Jitesh V. Patil were among the officials present at the meeting.
