Tom Cruise is reportedly in the mix for a villainous turn, as a new report from DanielRPK suggests he is being eyed for the antagonist role in Joseph Kosinski‘s film adaptation of the iconic 1980s NBC series Miami Vice for Universal Pictures.

The project is said to draw inspiration from the pilot episode of the original series starring Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas, exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows two detectives working undercover. The script has been penned by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer.

The original pilot was produced by Michael Mann, who previously directed Cruise in 2004’s Collateral and later helmed a grittier big-screen reboot of Miami Vice, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in 2006.

Previous reports indicated that Austin Butler is in talks to take on the co-lead role of James “Sonny” Crockett, one of the series’ most iconic characters. Meanwhile, recent Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan is said to be circling the role of his on-screen partner, detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. If confirmed, this could bring three of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars together on the big screen.

If Cruise signs on, it would mark his third collaboration with Kosinski following Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick. The latter broke all sorts of box office records when released in 2022, with a global box office take of almost $1.5billion – and over $715million in the US alone.

Miami Vice is set for release on August 6th, 2027.
