Enriched soil (Pixabay)Fertilizers exported by all countries attracted US$103.4 billion worth of global spending for 2025.
That dollar amount results from an average 22.4% increase collected by all shippers of fertilizers over the five-year period starting in 2021 when overall fertilizer exports were worth $84.5 billion.
From 2024 to 2025, the value of exported fertilizers accelerated by 22.8% compared to $84.2 billion.
Fertilizers are critical agricultural drivers, essential for growing crops that feed people around the world.
The 6 biggest fertilizer exporters in 2025 were Russia, mainland China, Canada, Morocco, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United States of America. Collectively, those major suppliers approached three-fifths (56.4%) of globally exported fertilizers during 2025 up from 53.2% for 2024.
Applying a continental lens, countries in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported fertilizers during 2025 with shipments valued at $37.4 billion or 36.2% of the world’s total. In second place were exporters located in Asia at 35.3% while 13.7% of international fertilizer shipments originated from Africa. Another 12.3% was sent from exporters in North America.
Smaller percentages came from suppliers in Latin America (2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean notably Trinidad and Tobago, then Oceania (0.4%) mostly Australia.
Focusing on different types of exported fertilizers, over three-quarters (76.5%) were nitrogen-based products. Potassic fertilizers represent 18.1% compared to phosphatic fertilizers at 4%. Excluding those mineral or chemical fertilizer subcategories, the other fertilizer type is animal or vegetable fertilizers which accounted for the remaining 1.4%.
For research purposes, the high level 2-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 31 for fertilizers.
