Neon Pictures has released the trailer for stoner comedy The Wrong Girls, starring Kristen Stewart  and Alia Shawkat .

In The Wrong Girls, Stewart and Shawkat play pot-loving friends Frankie and Molly, whose lives are upended after a case of mistaken identity.

This is the feature directorial debut of writer-director Dylan Meyer, who co-wrote Amy Poehler’s 2021 Netflix coming-of-age comedy ‘Moxie‘. 

Meyer spoke to Entertainment Weekly, describing the central characters as “codependent boneheads who have spent the last 10 years blissfully in a fog of weed smoke, co-signing each others’ bad choices and screening adulthood’s increasingly insistent calls”.

Meyer continues: “Just as Molly’s boyfriend asks her to move in with him, Frankie is mistakenly given a briefcase full of glowing vials of an experimental psychedelic.”

That briefcase – and the drugs – send Frankie and Molly on a downward spiral. The friends are left with lingering telepathic abilities, including the ability to connect with their cats. Their possession of the psychedelics also places them in the path of Danish villains who begin to see Frankie and Molly as disposable human test subjects.

Stewart describes the movie as a “stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f—ing stupid… I think you’ll like it.”

The cast includes LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah) as NotMetalHeadDave, the for-hire action man who gives Frankie and Molly the briefcase; Zack Fox as Molly’s boyfriend Josh and Tony Hale (Arrested Development) as a real estate developer. Kate McKinnon (Barbie) plays Dr. Olsen, the Danish scientist behind the drugs, and Geena Davis additionally stars as Dr. Olsen’s partner in life and science. The cast also includes Seth Rogen (The Invite) and Kumail Nanjiani, voicing Frankie and Molly’s cats.

The Wrong Girls doesn’t have a UK release date or a distributor. The film  will released in the U.S by Neon on 14th August.
