When asked about it by reporters, Trump insisted he had to start the war to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. He still acknowledged the war’s impact on Americans, noting, “the price, not the war, the price.”
“We stopped them from having a nuclear weapon, and they will never have a nuclear weapon,” he also said.
The president also told reporters that he will “probably” get along with Democrats after they take control of the House and the Senate, noting, “unless they want to get destructive.”

Vance’s 2028 hopes took a hit in the midterms. He is now working to shed the MAGA label - with Rubio waiting in the wings
As Donald Trump enters the lame duck phase of his presidency, Vice President JD Vance’s White House prospects in 2028 appear to be slipping after the collapse of the Republican coalition in disastrous midterm elections for the party.
Vance, widely considered the rightful heir to MAGA and GOP presidential frontrunner, now finds himself in a tough spot. The vice president issued a lengthy statement Wednesday morning in which he blamed Trump’s war in Iran for the Democratic blowout.
“The reason we lost is the war,” he said. “The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay.”

Two Senate races remain too close to call
While Democrats celebrated a massive victory Wednesday, two Senate races remained too close to call.
Mississippi’s Senate seat was too close to call after Democratic prosecutor Scott Colom challenged Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican seeking a second full term.
Alaska’s Senate race may also take longer to determine a winner, as about a quarter of ballots remained uncounted as of Wednesday morning.
There are also a handful of House races that have yet to be called, leaving questions about whether Democrats may see an even larger majority take form.

Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro urges Democrats to 'walk and chew gum at the same time'
Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is urging Democratic members of Congress to “walk and chew gum at the same time” by holding the Trump administration accountable while also passing legislation.
During a news conference Wednesday, Shapiro said he spoke with Democratic leaders Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Chuck Schumer, both of New York, about priorities after the party took control of the House and Senate.
“We talked about the need to pass an agenda that makes sure that those two-thirds of new members [of Congress] aren’t one-hit wonders,” he said, “but rather members that keep coming back because we have a commonsense agenda in Washington that actually helps people.”

Mitt Romney blames Trump administration for GOP's widespread midterm losses
Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney blamed the Trump administration for the party’s widespread midterm election losses.
“Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies,” Romny wrote.“
Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party,” he added.

Mamdani hails ‘a new generation of leadership’ as Democrat allies chalk up midterm wins
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has hailed incoming Democrat progressives as “a new generation of leadership” after a blue tsunami in the midterm elections.
Speaking on Wednesday, after Donald Trump and the Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress, Mamdani said the results showed “Americans are tired of being told that their needs are unrealistic by politicians who’ve been bought by the wealthiest people in the country. This country has elected a new generation of leadership.”
Referencing young progressives like Texas’ James Talarico and Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed, he continued, “I hear often the politics we’re fighting for in New York City are not possible outside of city limits and what last night showed us is that working people are the majority whether we are speaking of Austin or Ann Arbor or Astoria and it is time to put those same people first in our politics.”

Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed said Michiganders rejected Republicans’ efforts to tear him down over his identity.
El-Sayed, who is Muslim and Egyptian, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that Michigan voters “rejected a hateful, spiteful campaign that had nothing to say about the issues and only wanted to point to my name and my face.”
“Michiganders rejected that. Every single county, every single one, pushed against that,” he added.
