A Central Asian nation bordering Afghanistan, the Republic of Turkmenistan shipped US$11 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2025.

That calculated dollar amount results from a 251.8% acceleration from 5 years earlier in 2021 when Turkmenistan’s exports totaled $3.13 billion.

Year over year, the value of products exported from Turkmenistan dropped by -17.9% compared to $13.4 billion during 2024.

Turkmenistan’s 3 biggest exported products by sales in 2025 are petroleum gases, refined petroleum oils and potassic fertilizers. Collectively, that trio of leading exports represents 92.5% of the overall revenues from the country’s total shipments during 2025. Such a high percentage indicates an intensely concentrated array of exported goods.

Turkmenistan’s Major Trading Partners

The latest available country-specific data shows that 96.9% of products exported from Turkmenistan was bought by importers in: mainland China (76.7% of the Turkmen total), Türkiye (6.8%), Greece (2.2%), India (2%), Kazakhstan (1.7%), Morocco (1.6%), Brazil (1.5%), Azerbaijan (1.3%), Bulgaria (0.92%), Singapore (0.86%), Argentina (0.84%) and Romania (0.6%).

From a continental perspective, 90% of Turkmenistan’s exports by value was delivered to fellow Asian countries while 4.3% was sold to importers in Europe.

Turkmenistan shipped another 2.7% worth of goods to customers located in Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Smaller percentages went to buyers in Africa (2.2%), North America (0.8%) then Oceania’s Australia only (0.003%).

Given Turkmenistan’s population of 6.7 million people, its total US$11 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $1,650 for every resident in the Central Asian nation. That dollar metric lags the average $2,100 per capita one year earlier in 2024.

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Turkmen global shipments during 2025. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Turkmenistan.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$9.8 billion (89.4% of total exports)
  2. Fertilizers: $729.2 million (6.6%)
  3. Salt, sulphur, stone, cement: $120.3 million (1.1%)
  4. Cotton: $85.9 million (0.8%)
  5. Vegetables: $58 million (0.5%)
  6. Inorganic chemicals: $36.6 million (0.3%)
  7. Plastics, plastic articles: $17.5 million (0.2%)
  8. Soaps, washing preparations, lubricants, waxes: $17.1 million (0.2%)
  9. Gums, resins, other vegetable saps: $11.8 million (0.1%)
  10. Miscellaneous textiles, worn clothing: $11.2 million (0.1%)

Turkmenistan’s top 10 export product categories generated 99.3% of the overall value of its global shipments.

Salt, sulphur, stone and cement represent the fastest grower among the top 10 export categories, up by 860.3% from 2024 to 2025.

In second place for improving export sales were fertilizers via a 57.8% advance.

Turkmenistan’s shipments of miscellaneous textiles or worn clothing posted the third-fastest gain in value, up by 31.1%.

The leading decliner among Turkmenistan’s top 10 export categories was plastics, both as materials and including items made from plastic, thanks to a -60.8% year-over-year drop.

From the more granular four-digit Harmonized Tariff System code level, petroleum gases represent Turkmenistan’s most valuable exported product representing 77.7% of the country’s total. In second place were refined petroleum oils (11.4%) trailed by potassic fertilizers (3.3%), nitrogenous fertilizers (also 3.3%), non-sublimited sulphur (1.1%), cotton-heavy yarn (0.6%), fresh or chilled tomatoes (0.5%), petroleum oil residues (0.2%), fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine (0.1%), then miscellaneous organic cleaning preparations (also 0.1%).

Products Driving Turkmenistan’s Best Trade Surpluses

Overall Turkmenistan achieved a US$6.1 billion trade surplus for 2025, reducing by -21.1% from $7.8 billion in black ink one year earlier in 2024.

The following types of Turkmenistan product shipments represent positive net exports or a trade balance surplus. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports.

In a nutshell, net exports represent the amount by which foreign spending on a home country’s goods or services exceeds or lags the home country’s spending on foreign goods or services.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$9.8 billion (Down by -21.5% since 2024)
  2. Fertilizers: $721.9 million (Up by 65.8%)
  3. Salt, sulphur, stone, cement: $97.1 million (Reversing a -$15.1 million deficit)
  4. Cotton: $80.6 million (Down by -17.7%)
  5. Vegetables: $54.3 million (Up by 29%)
  6. Gums, resins, other vegetable saps: $10.4 million (Up by 12.2%)
  7. Inorganic chemicals: $8.7 million (Down by -76.2%)
  8. Vegetable plaiting materials: $7.1 million (Up by 77.2%)
  9. Raw hides, skins not furskins, leather: $6.1 million (Down by -33.6%)
  10. Silk: $744,000 (Reversing a -$41,000 deficit)

Historically, Turkmenistan earns highly positive net exports in the international trade of petroleum gases, refined petroleum oils and crude oil. In turn, these cashflows indicate Turkmenistan’s strong competitive advantages under the category mineral fuels including oil.

Products Causing Turkmenistan’s Worst Trade Deficits

Below are exports from Turkmenistan that result in negative net exports or product trade balance deficits. These negative net exports reveal product categories where foreign spending on home country Turkmenistan’s goods trail Turkmenistan importer spending on foreign products.

  1. Machinery including computers: -US$1.2 billion (Down by -22.2% since 2024)
  2. Electrical machinery, equipment: -$662.8 million (Down by -35%)
  3. Vehicles: -$500.4 million (Down by -7.2%)
  4. Articles of iron or steel: -$330.7 million (Up by 4.3%)
  5. Optical, technical, medical apparatus: -$153.1 million (Up by 0.3%)
  6. Plastics, plastic articles: -$139.7 million (Up by 46.7%)
  7. Pharmaceuticals: -$137.9 million (Up by 13.6%)
  8. Furniture, bedding, lighting , signs, prefab buildings: -$121.9 million (Up by 15.8%)
  9. Meat: -$119.3 million (Up by 77.3%)
  10. Other chemical goods: -$114.9 million (Down by -2.4%)

Turkmenistan has highly negative net exports and therefore deep international trade deficits under the product category titled machinery including computers.

Turkmenistan Export Companies

No Turkmenistan corporations rank among Forbes Global 2000.

Wikipedia lists exports-related companies from Turkmenistan. Selected examples are shown below.

  • Turkmenistan Airlines (airliner)
  • Türkmengaz (natural gas)
  • Türkmennebit (oil, gas)

In macroeconomic terms, Turkmenistan’s total exported goods represent 5.9% of its overall Gross Domestic Product for 2025 ($186.1 billion valued in Purchasing Power Parity US dollars). That 5.9% for exports to overall GDP in PPP for 2025 compares to 7.8% for 2024. Those percentages suggest a relatively decreasing reliance on products sold on international markets for Turkmenistan’s total economic performance, albeit based on estimates over a short timeframe.

Another key indicator of economic health is a country’s jobless rate. Turkmenistan averaged a 4.27% unemployment rate for 2025, up from the average 4.02% jobless rate in 2024.

Turkmenistan’s capital city is Ashgabat, nicknamed the “City of White Marble”.
