A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai over alleged abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, based on a complaint filed by BJP district working committee member Neeraj Kumar Rawat in Mahoba, the police said on Saturday (May 23, 2026).

The complainant alleged that Mr. Rai, through his comments and actions, spread hatred, gathered a crowd without permission, obstructed government work, and blocked a public road.

According to the complaint, the U.P. Congress president arrived at the venue with a convoy of 15 to 16 vehicles and about 25 to 30 supporters, leading to obstruction of traffic movement in the area. The complainant also accused Mr. Rai of using “abusive and objectionable language” against Mr. Modi during the event, claiming that videos of the remarks were widely circulated on social media.

“On 22 May 2026, a video came to notice through social media in which the State president of the Indian National Congress, Ajay Rai, along with his supporters, created obstruction in government work by illegally gathering and blocking the public road and also made objectionable/indecent remarks regarding the Prime Minister of India. A complaint was received in connection with the above video at Kotwali Nagar Police Station, Mahoba. On the basis of the complaint, a case has been registered under the relevant sections. Necessary legal action is being taken in the matter as per rules,” said Vandana Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ACP) Mahoba.

However, Mr. Rai described the FIR as an attempt to prevent him from seeking justice for common people and accused the BJP government of misusing State apparatus to target opponents.

“The video is AI-generated and fake. The police case is a tactic to create fear. But, I will fight against the injustice of the BJP regime. They are misusing State apparatus to target opponents,” Mr. Rai told The Hindu
