During the MADE Show, we were running around like crazy trying to get a hold of and photograph as many of the bikes as we could. We had a pretty good system too: We’d both grab and wheel the bikes outside, and Zach would take his beautiful pictures of them (Zach’s Editor’s Note: I’d call them… decent). It wasn’t easy with just the two of us, so some inevitably slipped through the cracks. And Velo Orange’s bitchen new Escargot Cargo Bike was one of those bikes.

I kept seeing it outside at the Velo Orange booth, calling to me to grab it and take a picture, and every time I would remember to go grab it, it would be gone. Then it was on to the next bike, and the next, and eventually the show was over, and time got the best of us. And even then, I ran over to the Velo Orange booth only to find it gone again.

So the crew at Velo Orange sent over all of these photos they took, and some tasty tidbits of info about this beaut of a cargo bike.

The Escargot Cargo Bike

The new Velo Orange Escargot Cargo Bike is a collaboration with the iconic Japanese bike shop, Blue Lug. The two brands have roots in practical, functional bicycle design.

When they combined forces, the result is a steel cargo bike built around a specific wheel combination. The Escargot sports a 26″ rear wheel and a 20″ front wheel. This pairing keeps the front end lower to the ground, which helps maintain balance and stability when carrying loads.

The frame geometry and construction were developed with cargo use in mind. According to both bands, every tube, mount, and braze-on was placed to serve a specific purpose. This can ensure that the bike handles consistently whether it’s fully loaded or running empty. This would be ideal, especially for riders who rely on their bike for errands, commuting, or hauling gear around the city.

Speaking of urban cyclists, if you are looking to carry more without switching to a car or a bulky cargo solution, the Escargot fits into that niche of practical, rider-friendly choices.

As always, a bike frame made of steel keeps things practical, repairable, and durable. The Escargot’s mixed-wheel setup gives it a distinctive look while still being functional in weight distribution and handling.

Whether you’re picking up groceries, transporting tools, or just loading up for a longer ride, this bike is designed to make the experience feel manageable and comfortable rather than like a compromise.

Escargot Specs/Features

These are Velo Orange’s tentative specs for the Escargot.

• Frame: 4130 double-butted chromoly frame with sliding rear dropouts and disc brake mounts, integrated grab handle
• Fork: heat-treated 1 1/8″ threadless and 100mm thru-axle with accommodations for fenders and cargo cages
• Front Rack: Large, designed for this bike from chromoly steel with mounts for Wald 157 basket, Blue Lug Milk Crate, and many other large platform portage implements.
• Rear Wheel: 26”, disc only, 12×142 thru-axle
• Front Wheel: 20″, 406 Bead Seat Diameter, disc only, 12×100 thru-axle
• Tire Clearance: 2.3″ tires WITH fenders or 2.5” without
• Bottom Bracket: English threaded 68mm
• Brakes: Disc post-mount rear, IS Front, 160mm rotors suggested
• Seatpost: 31.6mm (35.0mm seat collar not included). Compatible with internal dropper posts.
• Front Derailleur Size: 35.0mm (1x crankset recommended, though)
• Water Bottle Mounts: Seat tube, downtube, and under-downtube bottle cage mounts
• Fender Bosses: seat stay bridge, chainstay bridge, under fork crown
• Frame Eyelets: Eyelets on rear dropouts for racks and fenders. Eyelets on top of top tube for gas tank-style bags
• Fork Eyelets: Eyelets on fork dropouts. Triple bosses on the blades for cargo/water bottle cages.
• Cable Routing: External on the downtube and internal dropper routing on the seat tube.

Velo Orange wanted you to know that they’ll have geo tables once everything is finalized after they do extensive real-world testing. They are currently expecting the Escargot to be available in Spring 2027.
