The Staircase has arrived with the “harrowing” true crime drama exposing a scandalous case.

The Staircase welcomes stars of Game of Thrones, The Sixth Sense and The White Lotus.

True crime drama The Staircase has landed on ITVX with the entire eight-part boxset now ready to stream for free following its initial release on HBO and Sky Atlantic four years ago.

After Kathleen Peterson’s body is found at the foot of the stairs in her North Carolina home, fingers start pointing at her husband Michael Peterson.

The subsequent murder trial sees prosecution argue that Michael killed his wife, while the defence states that it was a tragic accident, but who does everyone believe?

Michael Peterson - Colin Firth

Michael Peterson is left a grieving widower after his wife’s death but quickly becomes the key murder suspect when her autopsy reveals evidence of blunt-force trauma.

Acting legend Colin Firth stars as Michael Peterson, and is famed for work including Bridget Jones, Pride and Prejudice, The King’s Speech, Love Actually and The Kingsman franchise.

Kathleen Peterson - Toni Collette

Kathleen was Michael’s second wife with the couple appearing to have the perfect blended family life until she was found dead at her home in 2001.

She is played by actress Toni Collette who has starred in Hereditary, Muriel’s Wedding, The Sixth Sense, Wayward, Pieces of Her and Little Miss Sunshine, to name a few.

Margaret Ratliff - Sophie Turner

Margaret is one of Michael’s two adopted daughters who firmly believes in his innocence throughout.

Actress Sophie Turner is undoubtedly known for starring as Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones but some of her other parts have been in X-Men: Apocalypse, Joan and Tomb Raider.

Todd Peterson - Patrick Schwarzenegger

One of Michael’s biological sons Todd Peterson, who also protests that his father is innocent, is brought to life by actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

As well as starring as Saxon Ratliff in The White Lotus season three last year, the actor is known for being the son of Terminator icon Arnold Schwarzenegger writer Maria Shriver.

Caitlin Atwater - Olivia DeJonge

Actress Olivia DeJonge starred as Priscilla Presley in the 2022 biographical drama Elvis, as well as starred in Netflix series The Society and films The Visit and Better Watch Out.

DeJonge plays Kathleen’s biological daughter who initially believes Michael before autopsy reports reveal the injuries her mother suffered.

Freda Black - Parker Posey

Freda Black is the assistant district attorney in Durham County, North Carolina, working to prosecute crime writer Michael Peterson in The Staircase.

Actress Parker Posey has starred in the Scream franchise, Lost in Space, The White Lotus, as well as Superman Returns and You’ve Got Mail.

Sophie Brunet - Juliette Binoche

As Michael’s arrest makes headlines, it doesn’t take long before a French documentary crew starts following the family as they debate whether to believe his side of the story.

Taking on the role of the editor of the documentary Sophie Brunet is actress Juliette Binoche who has been in various French films like Chocolat, The English Patient and Damage.

Clayton Peterson - Dane DeHaan

One of Michael’s biggest supporters is his eldest son Clayton Peterson.
