Daniel Greaves, 34, from Grimsby, had not told his new girlfriend about his conviction for four sex offences involving children - she found out at Turkish border control

A woman found out she was dating a registered sex offender at a Turkish border control on holiday.

Daniel Greaves, 34, from Grimsby, had not told his new girlfriend about his conviction for four offences of engaging in sexual communications with a child two years ago.

The warehouse driver had received a two-year community order and was told he was on the Sex Offenders Register at Grimsby Crown Court in December 2024. He was also ordered to comply with conditions of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which meant he could have no unsupervised contact with under 16s.

Greaves has now admitted two breaches of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order in January and February this year.

Prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, barrister Craig Lowe told how in January of this year, Greaves and his new girlfriend went to a local pub for lunch with two children.

They went out again in February for a trip to the circus and Greaves was left in charge of two children while the woman went to the toilet, which meant he was left unsupervised with the children.

Mr Lowe told how Greaves and his girlfriend had difficulty getting into Turkey when they went on holiday, which was when she became aware of his previous convictions. The woman then alerted police.

Mr Lowe said: "He had not told anyone about his convictions and he was a registered sex offender."

That was for offences when he communicated with decoys set up by paedophile hunters pretending to be 13-year-old girls and a 14-year-old girl, reports GrimsbyLive.

He sent messages asking for photographs and suggesting they meet up. In one message he suggested they have a shower together and told one of the decoys he could have sex with her.

For Greaves, Michele Stuart-Lofthouse said her client had written a letter to the judge expressing his "true remorse". She said there had been no harm done on the outings with the children which were in public settings.

Judge Richard Woolfall said Greaves had been "extremely fortunate" he had not been charged with a more serious offence for the communication in 2023.

The judge said a condition of the court order was there had to be no contact with anyone under 16 years. "You were discussing with your probation officer that you were in a relationship and going on a date," he said.

"You were asked if you had informed her of your previous conviction. You told it was not the right time, so probation gave you time and said that if you did not the police would."

He said the defendant had not told the probation officer that there were children involved. Judge Woolfall said there was a trip to the pub with children but more concerning was the visit to the circus when he was left alone with children .

"You later went on holiday. You were turned around at Border Control in Turkey and you had to get a return flight," he said.

Judge Woolfall said the conditions of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order are "non-negotiable," adding: "They are there to protect children." He jailed Greaves for a total of 10 months.
