A new chapter in the world of sword-and-sorcery fantasy could be on the horizon, as plans are reportedly moving forward for a new Conan film that would reunite action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie.

According to recent reports, the project, currently being referred to as King Conan,  would see Schwarzenegger return to one of his most iconic roles more than four decades after first wielding the sword as Conan the Barbarian. The original Conan the Barbarian helped establish Schwarzenegger as a major action star and was followed by the sequel Conan the Destroyer in 1984.

The new film is said to be in development at 20th Century Studios, with McQuarrie attached to write and direct. The filmmaker is best known for his long-running collaboration with Tom Cruise on the recent Mission: Impossible instalments, making his involvement an intriguing prospect for a large-scale fantasy epic.

Schwarzenegger recently spoke about the project during an appearance at the Arnold Sports Festival, revealing that the story would centre on an older version of Conan. Rather than attempting to recreate the younger warrior audiences remember from the 1980s, the film would reportedly embrace the character’s age and explore a later chapter in his life.

The concept reportedly follows Conan after decades of ruling as king before being forced out of power, pushing the ageing warrior back into conflict. Schwarzenegger has suggested the story would still deliver the spectacle fans expect from the franchise, with battles, magic and mythical creatures playing a major role.

While the project is still in its early stages, the idea of Schwarzenegger returning to the role has already sparked excitement among fans of the original films. If the film moves forward as planned, King Conan could finally deliver the long-discussed sequel that audiences have been waiting decades to see- bringing the legendary barbarian back to the big screen one more time.
