Security was stepped up outside the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi on Wednesday (October 7, 2026) ahead of the planned arrival of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convenor Saurav Das, who is scheduled to submit an ‘intimation letter’ to the Delhi Police regarding the organisation’s proposed protest pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at Jantar Mantar on October 10.

Around 260 people, including 10 MPs, were detained on October 6 during the INDIA bloc protest march from Parliament to Election Commission of India. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K. C. Venugopal and Pawan Khera were among those detained after staging a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan; all were released later.

“What has been done to my country is treason,” Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said even as the Opposition parties closed ranks on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), marching from Parliament to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) headquarters to demand the scrapping of special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, restoring the names of deleted voters and sacking of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

    Mumbai Youth Congress accuses police of using force against women workers during protest

    The Mumbai Youth Congress accused the city police of using force against its women workers during a road blockade protest here to denounce the detention of party leader Rahul Gandhi by Delhi Police.

    Mumbai Youth Congress president Zeenat Shabrin alleged that some women workers were pulled by their hair and taken away in police vans during their agitation held on Tuesday (October 6) night.

    The road blockade was staged at the Bandra Reclamation around 11 p.m. to denounce the detention of Rahul Gandhi along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following their over eight-hour sit-in for not being allowed to march towards the Election Commission’s office in the national capital on Tuesday (October 6).

    Fight won't be easy, be prepared for prolonged agitation: CJP ahead of Oct 10 protest against CEC

    The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and student organisations on Wednesday (October 7) called for a united mobilisation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ahead of their October 10 protest, saying the agitation will continue until the electoral system is overhauled.

    Wednesday’s press conference brought together the CJP, the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). The Aam Aadmi Party’s student wing, Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), also participated.

    CJP co-convener Saurav Das urged people across the country to travel to Delhi and to come prepared for a prolonged agitation.

    “This fight is not going to be easy. I appeal to everyone across the country to join us, book train and flight tickets,” he said.

    We have the right to protest peacefully, says CJP's Saurav Das

    Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das slammed the concept of having to take permission from the government to protest against the government. 

    Calling it a ‘strange concept’, Mr. Das reiterated the citizens’ right to protest peacefully. 

    “We have a right to protest peacefully. We have designated sites to protest. We will exercise that right, no matter what,” Mr. Das told mediapersons.

    SC to examine plea for recall of split verdict on law governing appointment of CEC, ECs

    The Supreme Court on Wednesday (October 7) agreed to examine a plea seeking recall of its recent split verdict on whether challenges to the 2023 law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners should be referred to a larger Constitution Bench.

    On Wednesday, a Bench comprising the Chief Justice of India and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana was told about the recall application by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan.

    “We will examine and take a call,” the CJI said.

    Mr. Sankaranarayanan told the Bench that the recall application had earlier been mentioned before a Bench headed by Justice Datta, but the matter had subsequently been released from that bench and he was asked to mention it before the CJI.

    Kharge to host lunch for INDIA bloc MPs at restaurant

    A day after INDIA bloc MPs’ march and Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will host a lunch for the MPs of the alliance at 1:30 PM at Sagar Ratna, Janpath, sources said.

    The lunch meeting comes a day after Rahul Gandhi took the centre stage of the opposition’s street protest, forcing a total lockdown of Parliament Street as he led an over eight-hour sit-in that ended with his forcible detention after opposition MPs were stopped from marching towards the Election Commission’s office nearby.

    The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and others were released after 10 pm after about two hours in detention.
