This weekend, Costa Rica will become the cultural heart of the region as it officially hosts WGI (Winter Guard International) Latin America 2026. Far more than just a strict musical competition, the event serves as a vibrant cultural gathering space where diverse artistic expressions, intense choreography, and musical mastery converge.

The Palacio de los Deportes (Sports Palace) in Heredia is set to become the epicenter of this creative explosion. On Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, the venue will come alive with stunning costumes, dramatic backdrops, and the incredible talent of groups traveling from Costa Rica, Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and Brazil.

Three Disciplines, 15 Elite Groups

In total, 15 elite ensembles will take the floor, distributed across three core disciplines:

  • Color Guard: Combining dance, theater, and the synchronized manipulation of flags, rifles, and sabres.
  • Percussion: High-energy, theatrical drumming and rhythmic marching structures.
  • Winds Ensemble: Orchestral and marching brass/woodwind showmanship.

Each group has spent months refining their productions to be evaluated by a panel of highly respected international judges certified by WGI USA. These experts bring extensive experience from major competitive marching circuits in the United States. This year’s panel includes prominent names such as Shavon García, Zack Novicki, Don Click, Damon Padilla, and Andy Toth.

To ensure total transparency, equity, and alignment with global standards, three administrative representatives from the WGI US headquarters will also be on-site to oversee the scoring process and event operations.

The Road to the Finals: Prelims, Clinics, and World Championship Bids

The action kicks off on Saturday, May 23, with the preliminary rounds. This will be the public’s first look at the elaborate stories, complex choreographies, and custom set designs prepared by the groups. Following their performances, ensembles will receive direct constructive feedback and official scores from the judges.

In addition to the tournament tracker, Saturday afternoon features educational “clinics”—free workshops led by the international judges designed to help young performers strengthen, polish, and elevate their performance skills moving forward.

On Sunday, May 24, the stakes reach their peak with the Finals. The top-performing groups will re-evaluate their routines on the floor for a shot at the ultimate prize: fully paid registration to compete at the prestigious WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, in April 2027.

A Dream Revived and an Inclusive Atmosphere

Anthony Oviedo, General Director of WGI in Costa Rica, expressed that bringing this prestigious circuit back to Central America is a dream realized. He emphasized that a primary goal is to bridge the gap between these dedicated performers and the general public, encouraging audiences to witness firsthand the sheer athleticism and depth of marching arts.

Oviedo noted that the discipline pushes artists completely out of their comfort zones to deliver boundary-pushing entertainment.

“The bands and groups are deeply committed to living the dream of performing at WGI,” Oviedo shared.

Organizers are also heavily emphasizing a culture of mutual support. A dedicated campaign will run throughout the weekend to eliminate any form of mockery or disrespect inside the stadium, fostering absolute respect for all participating groups regardless of their size or competitive experience.

Event Logistics & How to Watch

Admission to WGI Latin America 2026 at the Palacio de los Deportes is completely free. While the first wave of tickets sold out almost immediately, organizers have advised fans to closely monitor their official social media channels for a potential second ticket release phase.

Costa Rica’s Growing International Footprint

Costa Rica previously hosted the Latin American editions of WGI in 2018 and 2019 before global pandemic restrictions forced a multi-year hiatus. The US-based parent organization chose Costa Rica for this grand return due to the monumental growth and international standing of Costa Rican youth bands.

Local marching groups have frequently made global headlines, notably with the historic appearances of the Banda Municipal de Zarcero and the Banda Municipal de Acosta at the world-famous Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Looking ahead, the Banda Salesiano Don Bosco is slated to represent the nation in another major US event this coming December.

Looking to the future, WGI Latin America is currently mapping out a major expansion strategy, aiming to bring future regional events directly to countries like Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico.
