Many phrases sound more elegant in French and post-coital tristesse is one of them. The English version is direct to the point of rudeness: post-nut clarity. This phenomenon, much discussed on social media, isn’t exactly the sadness à la Française, it’s more the sudden clear-headedness and, often, sense of regret men experience after climax, once the dopamine and arousal chemicals have crashed and their prefrontal cortex – responsible for logic and reasoning – is back online. It’s a calm, rational, remorseful view of the situation.

Now, there is a new offshoot of this sensation for 2026: post-gossip clarity. Ugh! Also originating on socials, it is that horrible, sinking feeling you get when the buzz has worn off after a particularly juicy goss sesh, especially if you got carried away and spilled a little too much tea. This is easily done, especially if you have fully committed to the conversation, which you always should when blessed with killer info.

Let’s not get into whether gossip is better than sex, but there are certainly parallels. During arousal, desire clouds the brain and leaves you unable to concentrate on anything else. If it’s good, it can make you gasp. There is also a certain level of gratitude involved. You don’t want to be selfish; you have to give as well as receive. But when you’re overexcited, it’s hard to hold back, which can lead to premature revelation.

Dishing the dirt well is an art form and perhaps post-gossip clarity is simply an occupational hazard, like an unfortunate side-effect of medication that makes you feel better in every other way. Besides, surely the unpleasantness of the deep wish that you hadn’t said something is more than cancelled out by what you heard in return? If not, maybe you’re doing it wrong.
