Melbourne Stars have strengthened their squad ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season by signing England twins Jamie and Craig Overton. The pair have agreed to one-year deals and will bring plenty of pace, power and experience to the Stars for the upcoming campaign.

The signings also have a historic significance, as Jamie and Craig are set to become the first twins to play in the men’s Big Bash League. They join a long list of brothers who have featured in the competition, including Shaun and Mitchell Marsh, Michael and David Hussey, and Ollie and Joel Davies.

Jamie Overton returns to the Big Bash with Melbourne Stars

Jamie Overton joins the Stars after spending the previous three seasons with Adelaide Strikers. The fast-bowling all-rounder made an immediate impact in the competition, finishing BBL|13 as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 16 wickets. He followed that with another impressive campaign in BBL|14, taking 14 wickets and earning a place in the Team of the Tournament after being named Adelaide’s MVP. Last season, he claimed 12 wickets from 10 matches at an average of 18.

Jamie also offers significant power with the bat, giving Melbourne another option in the lower order. His arrival adds further depth to a squad that already features Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. The Englishman is expected to be available for at least six BBL|16 matches. However, his availability could be affected by England’s ODI series against South Africa, which is scheduled to begin on January 10.

Craig Overton set for first Big Bash League appearance

Craig will experience the Big Bash for the first time after agreeing to join the Stars alongside his twin brother. The 32-year-old, who was born three minutes before Jamie, has represented England in both Test and ODI cricket. Craig made his international debut during the 2017-18 Ashes series in Adelaide and has also built an extensive domestic career with Somerset. He has represented the county for 14 consecutive seasons in the T20 Blast, making 121 appearances in the competition.

He also has recent experience in The Hundred, having spent five seasons with Southern Brave. Craig joined Trent Rockets this season and took eight wickets as the Nottingham-based side reached the final. Although he has not played international cricket since 2022, his experience across different formats will add another pace option to the Stars’ bowling attack.

Overton brothers add to Melbourne Stars’ growing squad

The Overton twins are the latest additions to an increasingly strong Melbourne Stars squad. The club recently signed New Zealand power-hitter Finn Allen, who moved from Perth Scorchers on a reported three-year deal, while Test-capped spinner Todd Murphy has also joined the squad. With Allen, Jamie and Craig filling the Stars’ three primary overseas spots, Melbourne have assembled a squad with considerable batting power and bowling depth.

Allen, Sam Harper, Maxwell, Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright are among the players expected to strengthen the batting lineup. The Overtons will now look to make their mark in the Big Bash, with their presence offering Melbourne Stars both a valuable combination of pace and hitting ability and a chance to witness a unique moment in BBL history.
