Leah McKendrick has been hired to write and direct an upcoming Shania Twain biopic for Sony Pictures, with reports suggesting she will draw on her experience as a singer-songwriter to channel the country pop icon’s artistry and career. There are currently minimal plot details for the biographical musical flick, titled Shania.

Twain herself will hold production credits alongside Amie Karp, and reports share that Jessica Welch previously wrote a screenplay for the five-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Sony.

Starting her musical career in 1983, Twain has sold over 100 million records and is best known for her hit singles You’re Still the One, From This Moment On, That Don’t Impress Me Much and Man! I Feel Like a Woman!. Such work has landed Twain the title of the top-selling female country-pop artist of all time, an achievement she has held since her 1997 album Come On Over.

Additional milestones in her career include being the first artist ever to release three consecutive Diamond-certified albums: 1995’s The Woman in Me, 1997’s Come On Over, and 2002’s Up. Twain is anticipating her seventh studio album release, Little Miss Twainon 24th July.

McKendrick’s writing debut was the 2017 film M.F.A by director Natalia Leite, while her directorial debut came in 2023 with the comedy drama Scrambled, starring the director herself alongside Ego Nwodim, Andrew Santino, Adam Rodriguez, Laura Cerón and Clancy Brown.

Sony’s additional musical biopic projects include Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Kasi Lemmons and the upcoming The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event by Sam Mendes.
