Actor Nathan Fillion (Castle and The Rookie) has teased a return of the 20th Century Fox sci-fi series Firefly in an animated style during the taping of the podcast Once We Were Spacemen at the Awesome Con.

Firefly cast members Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau were also present during the hint, with Fillion also reportedly telling Deadline that he believes the “dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant.”

“Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want,” he added. “More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”

It’s been confirmed that the animated revival will take place chronologically between the original series run and Serenity, the 2005 feature film expansion. The award-winning ShadowMachine has designed early concept art for the show, as shared by Deadline.

The original show, which ran for 14 episodes airing between 20th September and 20th December in 2002, takes place in the year 2517 and focuses on a band of humans arriving at a new star system, including the Serenity crew. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly was well received by critics and holds a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the show’s “oddball” blend of the Western and Sci-fi genres.

Going on to achieve ‘cult status’, Firefly has built a dedicated and long-running fanbase, who even arranged a charity screening of the feature film in the summer of 2006 for Whedon’s beloved charity Equality Now, raising over $65,000 for a non-profit organisation focusing on protecting women and young girls. This event happened two more times, raising $107,219 in 2007 and then $137,331 in 2009.

Additionally, a NASA Browncoat astronaut called Steven Swanson reportedly took DVD copies of the original series and the film expansion to accompany him on the Space Shuttle Atlantis’s STS-117 mission in the summer of 2007.
