ensex Today, Nifty 50 | Stock Market Live Updates - Find here all the live updates related to Sensex, Nifty, BSE, NSE, share prices and Indian stock markets for 26 August 2026
Indian shares fell on Wednesday, as losses in information technology stocks and Reliance Industries countered gains in heavyweight financials and optimism from a dip in oil prices.
SThe decline deepened in the closing auction, with the Nifty 50’s indicative close down by as much as 1.4%.
At the close, the Nifty 50 was 0.52% lower at 24,207.75 and the BSE Sensex 0.24% lower at 77,472.94.
They were marginally down at 0.24% and 0.05%, ahead of the CAS.
Ten of the 16 major sectors fell. IT stocks led losses with a 1.5% drop, with analysts attributing the slide to concerns over higher costs from U.S. visa curbs and caution ahead of Nvidia earnings.
The Trump administration on Monday proposed formalising an unprecedented $103,265 fee on new H-1B visas. Nvidia’s earnings, later in the day, are likely to test whether AI spending can sustain lofty expectations, which have fuelled AI-linked stocks and left Indian IT shares out of favour.

Market Quote by Vikram Kasat - Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital
The Indian equity market saw a Volatile performance in today’s trading session, where the Nifty remained below the 24,300 level along with the Sensex shedding its early gains. The fall in crude oil prices, owing to expectations of reduced tensions in the Strait of Hormuz region, helped, whereas underperforming sectors such as IT, auto, FMCG, and consumer durables weighed down the market. PSU banking, private banking, finance, and certain mid- and small-cap stocks managed to hold their ground well. Going ahead, global cues, US inflation data, crude oil movement and FII flows will remain key drivers. Investors should maintain a selective approach and focus on fundamentally strong stocks.

Markets warp by Mr. Avinash Agarwal, Senior Vice President and Head of Equity at Bandhan Life
“Markets have remained resilient despite geopolitical tensions and global macro uncertainty, supported by better-than-expected Q1 earnings and healthy performance across large-, mid- and small-cap segments. While volatility may persist due to US bond yields, inflation, crude prices and global developments, corporate fundamentals remain encouraging. After subdued returns in recent years, valuations and earnings offer a reasonable starting point for medium- to long-term investors.
Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have remained consistent equity buyers, providing strong domestic support. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), after a prolonged selling phase, have shown early signs of returning, with incremental buying in July and August. While flows remain modest, the stabilisation is encouraging and could strengthen if global capital flows rotate back towards India. Gold continues to gain strength on a softer US dollar, concerns over elevated US debt and renewed central-bank buying, reinforcing its safe-haven appeal. Silver is also supported by dollar weakness and a constructive commodity environment.
Overall, the combination of resilient earnings, supportive domestic flows and attractive opportunities across market segments reinforces our constructive long-term outlook, while a diversified approach remains key to navigating near-term volatility. We remain selectively positive on equities, with a diversified multi-cap approach offering flexibility to capture opportunities across market cycles.”

OW, TP Rs 750
IIFL Home Finance (~80% owned by IIFL, 20% by ADIA) received an income tax assessment order of Rs9.63bn
This appears to be a new demand, and most likely not expected by market participants.
Rs9.63bn tax demand is equal to 126%/58% of FY26 HFC/consolidated profit, and 105%/34% of FY27 consolidated profit (JPMe)
This is in continuation of the search and seizure action conducted on the IIFL group last year (block assessment covering April 1, 2018 to February 3, 2025).
A tax demand of Rs4.8bn was earlier raised on the IIFL Finance standalone entity (order dated May 12, 2026), on which firm has secured a stay of recovery until December 31, 2026 (a small positive); subject to paying 5% of the disputed demand (Rs238mn) in installments.
Management expects to appeal these with the higher authorities, as it believes it has substantial grounds to contest the additions.
It also does not presently expect a material impact on its financial position or operations
Total impact assuming full tax liability (previous and new) is estimated at ~Rs34/share.

Go to market (GTM) team is in place to go after large deals, thereby moving the portfolio away from project-based work (still 40% of business) to annuity-based deals that can provide better predictability of growth.
This has yielded some success as the large deal pipeline is the highest ever currently with 9 qualified deals of $300mn total contract value.
FY26 was year of stabilization through different strategic interventions and it expects FY27/28 to be the years where it starts seeing the success of the new strategy.
It has seen some success in margin expansion and has carved out a plan to reach its medium-term target of 15% through a combination of AI-led non-linearity of revenues and SGA leverage. Key metrics management will track to define success will be order inflow growth of double digits, especially from large deals, and margin expansion towards 15%.
Believe revamped strategy seems to be in right direction and execution will be key here for a re-rating.

Entering a strong earnings inflection point (EBITDA projected to expand at ~18% CAGR over FY26-28), supported by a multi-year earnings growth runway, which is largely driven by three levers: volume scale, integration-led structural cost reductions, and a rising value-added mix
Global aluminum market is structurally tightening due to China’s production cap, supply disruptions in Europe and Russia, and years of underinvestment outside China.
This, coupled with India’s robust demand growth and significant import substitution opportunities, creates a favorable outlook for VAML.
Further, valuation gap between VAML and its peers provides an opportunity for a structural re-rating of valuation multiples.

Bitcoin consolidates near $78,800 as US macro data, Fed signals set to drive next move
Market analysis by Vikram Subburaj, CEO, Giottus.com
August 26, 2026
Bitcoin traded near $78,800 on Wednesday morning, consolidating after briefly moving above $81,000 during the previous 24 hours. Bitcoin traded between approximately $77,871 and $81,235, highlighting continued volatility after its strong August recovery. Immediate support is now visible around $77,800-$78,000, followed by a stronger zone at $75,500-$76,000. On the upside, Bitcoin needs to reclaim $80,000-$81,250 convincingly for the rally to extend. Bitcoin has gained roughly 25% during August. The rally has been supported by a weaker dollar and improving liquidity conditions. Renewed investor interest in alternative stores of value has also supported the move.
The on-chain structure has also improved considerably compared with the beginning of the month. Bitcoin’s Short-Term Holder Cost Basis remains near $68,700, an area that repeatedly acted as resistance during the previous consolidation. Bitcoin is now trading comfortably above this level, meaning a large section of recent buyers has returned to profit. Around 155,000 BTC had also accumulated between $62,000 and $65,000, creating a deeper cost-basis support zone. However, continued spot buying will be necessary to prevent the latest move from becoming dependent primarily on leverage and momentum.
Institutional demand remains another important source of support. US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately $2.26 billion across six consecutive trading sessions between August 17 and 24. This included $606.3 million on August 20 and another $337.6 million on August 24. Farside currently reports a further $29.9 million for August 25, although the day’s total remains preliminary.
Large-cap altcoins are undergoing moderate profit-taking after last week’s strong rally. Ethereum traded near $2,458, down around 1.6%, while BNB slipped about 2.2% to $695. XRP was around $1.44, down 4.4%, Solana near $97, down 3.9%, and TRON around $0.336, down 2.8%. The pullback suggests investors are reducing risk ahead of major US macro events rather than abandoning the broader recovery.
Macro conditions could determine Bitcoin’s next move. July US PCE inflation and the second estimate of Q2 GDP are due later today, making them the immediate catalysts for global risk assets. Markets currently assign roughly a 60% probability that the Federal Reserve will leave rates unchanged at 3.50%-3.75% in September. This leaves a meaningful possibility of another rate hike if inflation remains persistent. Attention will then shift to Jackson Hole from August 27-29. Fed communication on inflation and monetary policy could influence Treasury yields, the dollar and crypto prices.
Our advice: The broader trend has improved, but investors should avoid chasing Bitcoin after its sharp August rise. Staggered accumulation, smaller position sizes and controlled leverage remain preferable. $78,000 is the immediate level to monitor, while a sustained break above $81,250 would strengthen the case for another leg higher.

Bitcoin slips below $80,000; $82,800-$83,000 resistance key as pullback risk rises
BTC pulled back below $80K and still needs to clear the key $82.8K–$83K resistance zone to strengthen the case for a new bull market. Improved ETF, spot and futures demand support the rally, but rising whale profit-taking, 53,000 BTC moving to exchanges and repeated rejection near $80K–$83K suggest short-term pullback risk. If momentum weakens, $73K is the first key support, followed by stronger support near $67K, Said CoinSwitch Markets Desk

Bitcoin hovers near $79,000 as traders await US macro data; $83,000 breakout key
Bitcoin is consolidating around $79,000 as traders await key US macro data, including PCE inflation and GDP figures. While the broader uptrend remains intact, Bitcoin needs a sustained close above its 365-day moving average near $83,000 to confirm a stronger bullish breakout. Market momentum has improved sharply, with CryptoQuant’s Bull Score rising from 30 to 80 in just one week, its highest level since October 2025. However, profit-taking is emerging, with short-term holder whales realizing a record $1.2 billion in profits over the past three days. This makes the week ahead crucial for Bitcoin’s next move, Prateek Gupta, Head of Business, Mudrex.

Crypto market today: Bitcoin, Ethereum face key levels as liquidations hit $642 million
Nischal Shetty, Founder, WazirX
“Crypto markets showed modest growth over the past 24 hours, with total market capitalization falling 1.27% to $2.65 trillion and the CMC20 declining 1.58%. Bitcoin, Ethereum and major altcoins traded lower. Liquidations reached $641.79 million, including $489 million in longs, confirming downside pressure. Yet sentiment remains optimistic with the Fear and Greed Index standing at 80. Positive ETF flows of $10.13 million show continued institutional interest.
BTC trades near $78,761, placing immediate support around $78,000 and then $77,000, while resistance sits near $79,500 and the psychological $80,000 mark. ETH at $2,455 has support at $2,400 and $2,350, with resistance around $2,500 and $2,550.
US equities closed firmer yesterday, led by Nasdaq, signalling improved risk appetite. Lower oil prices may also ease inflation concerns. This backdrop is mildly supportive for crypto, particularly Bitcoin and large-cap altcoins, though gold’s resilience suggests investors still prefer the asset over risk on ones like crypto, amid ongoing uncertainty globally.
Crypto derivatives activity cooled, but combined open interest across the top six tokens remains near $46.1 billion. Bitcoin and Ethereum open interest fell by about 3%, while sharper declines in XRP, Solana and Zcash indicate leverage reduction.
Futures traders could watch BTC support at $78,000 first, followed by $77,000, as per analysts. BTC resistance stands at $79,500 and $80,000. For ETH, immediate support is $2,400, with stronger downside support at $2,350; resistance lies at $2,500 and $2,550. A sustained BTC move below $77,000 & ETH below $2,350 could deepen long liquidations, while confirmed breaks for BTC above $80,000 and ETH above $2,550 could prompt short covering.
Today’s US GDP revision and PCE inflation release, followed by Friday’s Federal Reserve Chair speech at Jackson Hole, could move the dollar and yields, potentially amplifying crypto volatility.”

Rollover Analysis by Systematix
Breakout Watch, Triangle at Apex as Leadership Broadens
August expiry delivered the most constructive positioning setup in four months, with improving rollover, rising carry and broader sectoral leadership.
Nifty closed the August expiry at 24,288, gaining 1.3% and marking its highest close across six consecutive expiries. Rollover recovered to 77.4%, moving above the 3-month average for the first time since June, while cost of carry increased to 75.6 bps. The combination of positive price action, higher rollover and rising carry points to renewed directional conviction into September.
The index continues to trade within a symmetrical triangle between 23,500 and 24,700. With the triangle now approaching its apex, a decisive breakout above the 200-day moving average at 24,700 would open the path towards 26,000. India VIX remains below 15, suggesting continued volatility compression, but a triangle breakout could trigger a sharp expansion in volatility.
Bank Nifty also improved, gaining 1.3% with rollover at 79.2%, above its 3-month average. The index remains range-bound between 56,000–59,000, with 58,500 being the key breakout level for a sustained directional move.
At the market-wide level, however, the picture remains mixed. Total market OI contracted 4.3% and cost of carry eased materially, while stock-futures rollover improved to 91.9%. This indicates that the broader market is still going through a normalization phase, with fresh accumulation concentrated in specific sectors and stocks rather than being broad-based.
Participant positioning has become more constructive. FIIs reduced index shorts by 8.5% for the second consecutive expiry and added modestly to longs. Clients increased stock-futures longs by 5.2% to a fresh high, while Pros increased index longs sharply by 60.3%. DII de-risking remains the key offset, keeping the setup constructive but not uniformly bullish.
Sectorally, leadership is broadening. Realty remains the strongest accumulation theme, recording 12.5% market-cap growth and 7% OI expansion for the second consecutive expiry. Capital Goods has emerged as a new institutional accumulation pocket, while Healthcare continues to show selective fresh accumulation. Metals has recovered strongly, but much of the sector move remains short-covering driven. IT has reversed its July short-covering rally, with long unwinding accompanying price weakness.
For September, we prefer selective fresh-OI accumulation rather than broad sector exposure. HAL has the strongest positioning signal, with OI up 123.4% alongside a 5.9% price gain. JINDALSTEL is the strongest fresh-long signal in Metals, with OI up 96.9% alongside a 9% price gain. DLF remains the strongest absolute fresh-OI buildup in Realty, while LT, NYKAA and SUNPHARMA offer additional setups with supportive rollover/carry characteristics.
Preferred September ideas: HAL, JINDALSTEL, DLF, LT, NYKAA and SUNPHARMA.

Rollovers Action: Expiry Day | Market-wide: 91% | Nifty: 78% | Bank Nifty: 79% | Stock Futures: 92%
3M Average Rollovers: Market-wide: 90% | Nifty: 74% | Bank Nifty: 76% | Stock Futures: 92%
🖋️ We expect Nifty to trade in the range of 23,800 and 24,800. The formation of a “base ascending triangle” had reignited hopes of a breakout only to fizzle out as the August expiry ensued. The prices should move towards the higher end of the range now. In the absence of strong triggers, breakout still appears difficult.
🖋️The deluge of paper supply that has kept a lid on secondary market (~ $6.5bn worth of IPOs+QIPs+OFSs+Sell downs) will continue to influence the price action in the new series. By the virtue of offerings, FPIs have turned net buyers in India in secondary markets (~+$1.5bn) in August.
🖋️ Key events: Indian markets will closely track Jackson Hole, crude price trajectory, India’s GDP data and US inflation for cues.
🖋️ Key observations from expiry week:
-FPI net short in index futures stands at ~$3.14bn (down from ~$3.45bn last expiry) while HNI/Retail longs in SSF continue to remain higher at ~$21.8bn. Single stock futures for the third straight month in a row traded at ~6.3% annualised. Roll costs started at 64-65 bps (~6.7% p.a.) and later kept drifting. While Nifty roll costs remained subdued ~4.95% annualised (~47 bps), the average Nifty September futures premium to spot levels was ~165 points throughout expiry week which is 68 bps (7.1% annualised adjusted for dividend impact).
🖋️ Sectors to watch: Short covering in IT; Long Build up in metals, chemicals and telecom.
