AI developer Anthropic PBC has asked SK Hynix Inc., one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of memory chips, for supplies to make its own semiconductors, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae Won said.

Chey, while sitting on stage with Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei and other tech executives at an AI event in San Francisco, described it as remarkable for an AI developer to have its own chip ambitions. Chey’s conglomerate controls the South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix

Chey’s visit coincides with a trip by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to Silicon Valley, where he convened an AI summit. Multiple tech deals are being announced as part of his appearance including partnerships between Nvidia Corp. and South Korea’s Naver Corp. and SK Group.
