According to The Wrap, DreamWorks Animation is developing a sequel to the highly acclaimed The Wild Robot with the sequel based on the second book in the popular Peter Brown series, The Wild Robot Escapes.

Although the first film was directed by Chris Sanders, who will return to write the screenplay, the sequel will instead be co-directed by Troy Quane (Nimona) and Heidi Jo Gilbert (who was Head of Story for the first film). Producer Jeff Hermann will also return to the project. Not much more is known at this stage, but it is unsurprising Sanders isn’t returning to direct as he hasn’t returned to his other projects, such as Lilo and Stitch, The Croods and How to Train Your Dragon.

The Wild Robot was released in 2024 and was praised for its animation style and emotional depth. It marked Sanders’ return to animation after more than a decade away and received over 100 awards from film industry guilds, critic groups, and film festivals around the world, according to DreamWorks Animation. The film starred Lupita Nyong’o as a high-tech robot named Roz who washes up on an island populated only by animals.

It grossed $320 million globally and secured three Oscar nominations, including best animated feature, as well as three BAFTA nominations. The book the sequel will be based on follows the second book in Brown’s trilogy, Roz and her bird-son Brightbill (Kit Connor), as they try to escape a dairy farm and return to their island.

No release date has been set for The Wild Robot Escapes, but we will post any updates when they come!
