Melbourne Renegades registered their first win of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026 season with a thrilling four-wicket victory over Hobart Hurricanes at Bellerive Oval. The visitors looked comfortable during their chase of 155, but a sudden middle-order collapse brought the hosts back into the contest.

With the scores level and one ball remaining, the match appeared destined for a Super Over after Deandra Dottin failed to connect with the final delivery. However, an unusual decision by the umpires changed the outcome, handing Renegades a dramatic victory and leaving the Hurricanes stunned.

Last-ball no-ball call seals Melbourne Renegades’ dramatic victory

With Renegades needing five runs from the final three deliveries, Dottin edged Nicola Carey’s penultimate ball past the slip region for four. The boundary levelled the scores, leaving the visitors requiring just one run from the final delivery to win. Dottin failed to make contact with the last ball, which wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee collected while standing up to the stumps.

As both teams prepared for a Super Over, replays showed that Lee had collected the ball in front of the stumps, resulting in a no-ball call. The decision awarded Renegades the winning run and ended the contest at 155/6 in 19.5 overs. The unusual finish left the Hurricanes players surprised, as they had already gathered, expecting the match to continue into a Super Over.

Sophie Molineux and Hayley Matthews star as Renegades secure first win

Earlier, Hobart Hurricanes posted 154/7 after being asked to bat first. They suffered an early collapse as Molineux picked up three wickets inside the powerplay, reducing the hosts to 66/4. Carey then steadied the innings with 62 off 43 deliveries, while Chinelle Henry provided a late boost with 36 off just 18 balls. Molineux finished with impressive figures of 4/22.

In reply, Hayley Matthews led Renegades’ chase with 59 off 44 balls and shared a 69-run partnership with Courtney Webb (29). The visitors were cruising at 101/1 in the 13th over before Heather Graham’s three-wicket spell triggered a collapse. Renegades lost five wickets for 37 runs, bringing the Hurricanes back into the contest.

However, Dottin’s boundary and the subsequent no-ball sealed the victory for Renegades. Molineux was named Player of the Match, while Hobart remained winless after three matches. The Hurricanes also face an injury concern over Henry, who left the field with a suspected hip injury after bowling just one over.
