Mexico have claimed the first goal of the 2026 World Cup, just nine minutes into their curtain-raiser against South Africa.

The co-hosts put on a stunning pre-match ceremony to celebrate the opening of the tournament, and the excitement carried over onto the pitch.

It was Wolves forward Raul Jimenez who went closest first early on in the match, seeing his half-volley saved by South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

But a few minutes later, Mexico had their lead.

After some poor defending in the South Africa box, Julian Quinones found some space just inside the penalty area.

The 29-year-old rifled a low shot towards goal, with the ball darting through the legs of Williams and into the back of the net.

Azteca Stadium erupted with noise, and has not quietened down since. South Africa have grown into the game, but Mexico look the more dangerous side after the first drinks break of the match.
