It’s been confirmed that Alison Oliver (Saltburn, Task) has been cast in Bad Bridgets, an upcoming Irish thriller by writer-and-director Rich Peppiatt, who adapts from Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick’s book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem, and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women.

Oliver, who has just stepped off of Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation as Isabella Linton, will be replacing initially cast star Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People, Twisters), who was reported to have dropped out of the project due to schedule conflicts.

The adaptation will follow the book’s focus on the “Irish women [who] fled famine-era Ireland for North America in the 1800s-1900s, facing hardship and crime. Many lost their names, labelled “Bridget” by employers, with some becoming known as ‘Bad Bridgets’ in prisons.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein’s Oscar-winning costume designer, Kate Hawley, will be working on the film’s period-based wardrobe. James Price, the Oscar-winning production designer behind Yorgos Yanthimos’s film Poor Things, is also signed on

Oliver’s debut came with her central role as Frances in the BBC Three and Hulu miniseries Conversations with Friends, adapted for the small screen by Lenny Abrahamson and Leanne Welham, based on Sally Rooney’s book of the same title. She also appeared in Justin Kurzel’s The Order.

Oliver features in the film Christy, and the HBO series Task, with 2026 bringing her “breakout role” in the 17th feature film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 book.
