France finished fourth in the World Cup with Didier Deschamps' final game ending in a 6-4 loss to England in the third-place play-off.

Kylian Mbappe has reportedly been involved in increasing tensions between the France team and the French Football Federation (FFF) in the build-up to the World Cup. Les Bleus went into the tournament as favourites to lift the trophy but came unstuck in the latter stages.

They impressed with their performances in reaching the semi-final. But they fell to a 2-0 loss against eventual champions Spain in the final four.

After announcing that he would leave his role at the end of the World Cup, Didier Deschamps’ final game in charge came in the third-place play-off match vs England. After finding themselves 4-0 down at half time, France almost pulled off an unlikely comeback by making it 4-3, with Mbappe getting a brace, but two further goals from England saw the Three Lions eventually come out as 6-4 winners.

Following the match, Deschamps hinted at tensions behind the scenes when he outlined the reasons for his decision to step down. “I controlled my departure because I made the decision,” he said.

“I decided it had to end there. And if I made this decision, I say this sincerely, it wasn't for myself. It was for the good of the French national team. I haven't said it until now, but I'll tell you honestly, it wasn't for myself that I made this decision.

“Because the atmosphere was so unbearable, so focused on me, on me. The French national team doesn't deserve that.”

Reports in France have now shed light on a growing rift between the team and the FFF, particularly since the appointment of Philippe Diallo as president. RMC claims that Descamps felt less support from the federation following the change, with Zinedine Zidane now set to replace him.

It is added that there were ‘a few heated exchanges’ between the coach and FFF’s deputy director Erwan Le Prevosr. Issues such as travel, match tickets for families, and bonuses are said to be among them.

Mbappe was reportedly involved in a discussion over bonuses for the World Cup. L'Équipe reports that the squad were told just before their departure for the tournament that they would only receive their bonuses should they reach the semi-final stage.

Mbappe is said to have stood up and reminded the president in a heated exchange that the players understood the importance of each stage of the competition, while it was his first experience of the tournament. The issue is said to have been resolved on the plane to America, with Mbappe getting his way.

The France captain is also said to have played a role in convincing the federation to install a cryotherapy unit in the training camp. The unit was deemed essential for dealing with the heat in America, but was originally rejected for financial reasons. They changed their minds after Mbappe’s intervention.

As reported by FootMercato, another cause of tension is said to be the €120,000 (£102,000) spent on the FFF officials’ trip to America, compared to how the players’ families were allegedly treated. The situation was said to have fuelled a ‘sense of misunderstanding’ between the team and the federation.

There was also a noticeable absence of any mention of Deschamps in a LinkedIn post from Diallo congratulating the team on making the semi-final. He did, however, post a message thanking the manager following the loss to England.

While it’s still not been confirmed, France legend Zidane looks set to take over from Deschamps as manager. His first games will come in the Nations League when France takes on Turkey, Belgium and Italy in September and early October.
